The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is one of the great hotels of the Americas ? a 1930 National Historic Monument that has hosted Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Ernest Hemingway, and a roster of 20th century luminaries whose photographs fill the Hall of Fame corridor. The building's position on a headland above the Malec?n, with its two distinctive terracotta towers and manicured gardens, makes it Havana's most recognisable landmark after the Capitolio. For LGBTQ+ visitors, the Hotel Nacional offers more than historical atmosphere: it is one of the most reliably welcoming large hotels in Cuba, its terrace bar is a classic meeting point for international visitors, and its position in Vedado places it at the heart of Havana's most LGBTQ+-accessible neighbourhood. The gardens bar on the terrace ? overlooking the Malec?n and the Florida Straits ? is the finest sundowner location in the city. State-run and therefore more expensive than casas particulares, but the experience is irreplaceable.
