The 2019 Labour Code bans employment discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation, and a 2021 law set a single age of consent of 18. There is no recognition of same-sex couples, no adoption for them, no protection in goods and services, and no procedure for legal gender change. Attitudes are mixed rather than hostile: a 2016 survey found 46 percent of São Toméans would accept or not mind an LGBTQ neighbour, which is high for the region, though local LGBTQ people describe routine stigma. There is no organised community, no venues and no Pride. The islands are a small, quiet eco-tourism destination; visitors travelling as couples will meet curiosity rather than trouble and should be discreet in villages.
