⚖️ Indonesia's national criminal law does not ban private same-sex relations between adults, but that single fact misleads. Aceh province has applied Sharia since 2014, with up to 100 lashes for same-sex acts; two men were publicly caned in 2017 and two more were sentenced in August 2025 for kissing. The 2006 anti-pornography law is used against gay content and gatherings, and the new national Criminal Code in force since 2 January 2026 criminalises sex and cohabitation outside marriage on a family member's complaint, which same-sex couples can never satisfy. Police raids on private parties and hotels in Jakarta, with dozens arrested, recurred through 2025, and in October 2025 President Prabowo's administration classed the spread of 'LGBT culture' as a non-military national threat. There is no marriage, adoption, anti-discrimination protection or gender change without surgery, and Pew finds around 93 percent of Indonesians calling homosexuality morally unacceptable. Bali is the exception in atmosphere: Seminyak has a strip of gay bars and the island's tourism economy is welcoming, though the national law applies there too. Keep apps and affection private everywhere else.
