Safety notice for LGBTQ+ travellers to Indonesia: Indonesia's legal status for LGBTQ+ people is complex and worsening: • No federal law criminalises consensual same-sex activity (outside Aceh). • 2022 Criminal Code revision criminalised all extramarital sex (effective 2026) — applies to same-sex couples implicitly. • Aceh province enforces Sharia law: up to 100 strokes of cane for same-sex acts. Multiple public canings documented. • Police raids on "gay gatherings" have increased since 2017, with arrests typically under pornography laws. • Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric from political and religious leaders has intensified. Bali is the most relaxed destination, with several gay-friendly bars and a long-established tourist scene in Seminyak. Other Indonesian destinations (Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya) have small underground scenes but with higher risk. If you visit: • Bali — generally fine for discreet behaviour. Public PDA still attracts attention but is rarely prosecuted. • Outside Bali — be very discreet. Aceh is a no-go zone. • Avoid public displays of affection anywhere. • Foreign nationals have been arrested in Indonesia for online activity, parties, and bath house raids. • Don't post LGBTQ+ content from Indonesian IPs.
