About Love Lies Bleeding

Directed by Rose Glass, Love Lies Bleeding is a 2024 romantic crime thriller starring Kristen Stewart as Lou and Katy O’Brian as Jackie.

Lou is a reclusive gym manager whose life changes when Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder on her way to Las Vegas, arrives in town. Attraction quickly turns into an intense romance. However, their relationship soon becomes entangled with violence and Lou’s criminal family.

As a result, what begins as a love story develops into something much stranger, darker and more explosive.

Set against a sweaty, neon-soaked vision of the American Southwest in the late 1980s, Love Lies Bleeding blends queer romance with crime, revenge, desire and dark humour. At the same time, the film plays with ideas of strength, transformation, obsession and power.

Why Love Lies Bleeding?

Our Sapphic Film Series in Vienna celebrates films that put sapphic characters, relationships and experiences at the centre of the screen.

Love Lies Bleeding does exactly that while refusing to make its queer protagonists neat or uncomplicated. Instead, the film gives us messy desire, morally complicated characters and a romance that becomes increasingly dangerous.

Moreover, Rose Glass takes familiar elements of crime thrillers and neo-noir cinema and gives them a distinctly queer perspective.

So, if you like your love stories tender, strange, muscular and slightly unhinged, this one is for you.

What to Expect

The screening starts at 19:00, and entry is completely free.

You do not need to register or reserve a ticket for the screening. However, arriving a little early is recommended if you would like to get settled, order a drink or find your preferred seat before the film begins.

Our Sapphic Film Series is a community event. Therefore, you are welcome whether you identify as sapphic yourself or simply want to enjoy queer cinema in a respectful and inclusive environment.

The film includes strong violence and gore, domestic abuse, drug and steroid misuse, strong language, sexual content and nudity. It also contains brief homophobic behaviour and references.
