Bar Zum schmutzigen Hobby

This had been my regular club since 2013; everyone knew each other. After the pandemic and my long absence, I (as a straight man) was no longer allowed in. I don't know what the men there got up to in my absence, but it seems things have generally gotten worse for women and queer people in Berlin. As a straight person, you feel like you're under general suspicion. This development is very unfortunate, but the club itself isn't to blame.

The atmosphere was amazing. There is a 7€ entrance fee, the bouncer was very nice, the drinks were very good and very fairly priced, and my favorite part was that there was plenty of room to sit and you can have a proper conversation outside without having music blasted through your ears. The volume was spot on, there were small speakers outside and you can still listen to the music, and even when you get inside its still in a perfect volume. Very good experience overall.

The bouncer asked about our sexuality at the entrance. As a bisexual, queer person, I was then turned away with the comment that other people claim to be bisexual just to harass women inside. I was explicitly rejected because of my bisexuality. Another person in our group was heterosexual, which didn't bother the bouncer. Apparently, he perceives a bisexual person as a greater risk than a heterosexual person. Biphobia is clearly present here. It was an extremely discriminatory and sad experience in a place where one would expect openness towards a queer clientele.

The experience was not nice at all. The vibe inside was super boring and the bartender was not nice at all. I literally asked for a glass of water and he refused to give me without paying for it even tho we paid entrance. It is basic human decency to give people tap water if they asked for it. Other places and bars in Berlin give water for free…

It was amazing, great club!

I am a regular visitor to your establishment and have had many enjoyable evenings there. It is all the more disconcerting, therefore, that these experiences are repeatedly marred by the behavior of one of your doormen. Both my companion and I have had to endure inappropriate comments on several occasions. Last night, however, marked a low point: I arrived with my brother, and we were questioned about our sexual orientation at the entrance. We were refused entry on the grounds that we didn't look "gay enough." Even our statement that we are bisexual was not accepted. I find this approach intrusive and discriminatory. Judging sexual identity based on physical characteristics crosses a clear line and contradicts the principle of an open and respectful space. I urge you to take this incident seriously and to reflect on the behavior of your door staff accordingly. Update: I was previously questioned about my sexual orientation and refused entry on the grounds that I didn't look "gay enough." After posting a factual one-star review, I was informed on my next visit that I was now banned – solely because of that review. Literally: “That’s it for you. Because of your Google review. Banned by the boss.” This makes it perfectly clear what this is all about: Not about safety, not about atmosphere – but about power, arbitrariness, and the deliberate exclusion of critical voices. Anyone who speaks out against discrimination is thrown out. A place that prides itself on openness but sorts guests based on their appearance and punishes criticism with a ban has a structural problem. This isn’t just “tough door policy”; it’s simply overbearing and shameful.

The staff were all very friendly (especially at the bar and entrance), and even the bouncers were nice to us. The crowd was okay, but clearly mostly in their mid-30s and older. The music wasn't great either. A shandy for €6.00 ​​is quite a price tag. Overall, I don't think I'll be coming back.
