Beacon of Hope

At the Canal Street edge of Sackville Gardens rises a slender decorated steel column: the Beacon of Hope, the United Kingdom's only permanent memorial to people lost to HIV and AIDS — and, pointedly, to those living with HIV today. Conceived in 1997 and erected in 2000 by artists Warren Chapman and Jess Boyn-Daniel, the Beacon carries a mosaic base referencing the panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, and timeline plaques set into the surrounding path mark the epidemic's milestones year by year from 1981. Manchester's World AIDS Day candlelight vigil gathers here each December 1st, organised with George House Trust. What you see today: the column, the timeline underfoot, and — a few steps away — the Alan Turing Memorial, making Sackville Gardens the most concentrated patch of queer remembrance in Britain. Free, always open, directly beside the Gay Village it watches over.
