Gay Bars & Clubs in České Budějovice: An Honest Picture

České Budějovice, the South Bohemian capital best known for Budweiser Budvar beer, is a relaxed and LGBTQ+-friendly city — but it does not have a gay bar or gay club of its own. There is no dedicated LGBTQ+ nightlife venue in the city today, and we would rather tell you that plainly than send you to bars that are not actually part of the community.

What Happened to the Scene

For years the city's one gay-friendly nightspot was Mighty Bar Velbloud, a music club that hosted a recurring gay and lesbian party known as Pinkout roughly once a month. That club has since closed, and no other venue has taken over the role. The mainstream bars and clubs around the historic centre are perfectly welcoming places for a night out, but none of them is run for, or markets itself to, the LGBTQ+ community — so it would be misleading to list them here as gay venues.

Where LGBTQ+ Life Actually Happens

In České Budějovice, queer life is built around community rather than nightlife. The group BUDQueer organises meetups, film screenings, discussions and workshops, and takes part in the city's larger festivals such as Majáles and the One World (Jeden svět) film festival. The long-running regional organisation Jihočeská Lambda provides support, advocacy and a stable structure for the community. Checking BUDQueer's Facebook page is the best way to find current events and the cafés or venues they are being held in.

Where to Go Out Instead

If you are looking for actual gay bars, clubs or a sauna, the nearest real scene is in Prague, about 2.5 hours away by direct train, where a lively cluster of venues is concentrated in the Vinohrady district. Prague makes an easy day trip or overnight from České Budějovice. Brno also has a small dedicated scene.

Bottom Line

Enjoy České Budějovice for its architecture, its beer and its superb day trips to Český Krumlov and beyond, and connect with the local community through BUDQueer and Jihočeská Lambda — but plan on Prague for a night in gay bars and clubs.
