Frequently asked questions about LGBTQ+ travel in Nicaragua
Same-sex relations are legal in Nicaragua, but social attitudes vary and public displays of affection can attract negative attention. Seit 2008 legal. Keine Ehe/eingetragenen Partnerschaften (Familiengesetzbuch 2014 = Mann + Frau). Major cities and international tourist areas are usually more welcoming than smaller towns and rural areas.
No — same-sex marriage is not currently recognised in Nicaragua. Nicaragua decriminalised same-sex relations in March 2008 and the penal code treats sexual-orientation bias as an aggravating factor in crimes, with a 2014 health ministry resolution banning discrimination in health services. Against that, the 2015 Family Code limits marriage, partnerships and adoption to heterosexual couples, and Article 72 of the constitution refers to unions between a man and a woman; there is no legal gender change and no general anti-discrimination law. Since the 2018 uprising the Ortega-Murillo government has closed thousands of NGOs, including LGBTQ groups, and independent media reporting on violence against LGBTQ people has been largely suppressed. The group La Corriente still counted 35 assaults, two hate crimes and a murder in 2023, most against trans women, and says most violence goes unreported. Polling shows around a quarter of Nicaraguans supporting same-sex marriage. Managua has a few discreet bars and Granada and San Juan del Sur see gay travellers without trouble. Visitors are not targeted; the risks fall on locals and on anyone seen as political.
