This is a big college and a major part of the local economy and education system. The campus is attractive with some nice old buildings and is located in an upscale part of town. Worth some time to walk around. Lots of young people around.
We had a little wonder around and walked through a few plazas. In one there is a statue of George Washington. We went to an exhibition on maps which was cool.
I studied and now work at this place. GWU has nice open spaces with benches. The environment is very friendly and safe. You can spend a nice eve chatting with your loved one on a bench at Kogan Plaza, near the clock and the water fountain.
This university is right in the center of DC. It has an urban setting, as this location doesn’t have a campus separate from the city. There is also a Mount Vernon location which is a more typical collage campus.
The GWU hosted a local high school graduation. The campus was absolutely lovely. It was such a pleasure being able to see the campus in person and walk the streets around campus.
As a place to visit, there isn't much unless you know where to look. Hidden away and barely advertised is a great textile museum, a medical museum in the building where medical students take classes and the Lisner Auditorium which hosts some fantastic concerts each year.
We walked up Pennsylvania Avenue through the University and we enjoyed looking at the various buildings with colonial style architecture.
Accessible by Metro but not worth it. The campus is a bunch of buildings. The streets are noisy and crowed. The hospital and medical facilities make the streets even more crowed during the day. It is summer the tourists are everywhere.
Easy to walk through this university and not even know it’s a university! Some lovely buildings. Spotted one fraternity house which was interesting. Area can be swamped with students which makes it difficult getting a table at the more reasonably priced restaurants. Can be noisy in them too.
GWU is the oldest college and university in DC, dating from 1821. It opened the first medical school there and has served US Presidents in good times and bad, including GWU medical faculty arriving at the scene of President Lincoln's assassination in the Ford Theater (but they found him removed to the boarding house across the street, where he died). The collection of campus buildings a fairly large area in downtown DC and offers pleasant vistas for the general tourist or academics visiting GWU.
My alma mater, 1988. Love going back!
Excellent place and a history beyond compare.
🐎 Hidden gem in DC! Stopped by the George Washington University — Museum & Textile Museum to see Adorning the Horse and was impressed. The exhibit showcases stunning horse textiles, saddle covers, and equestrian art from around the world, highlighting how horses have represented power, prestige, and culture across centuries. Worth a visit if you’re in Foggy Bottom! No tickets needed.
