Safety notice for LGBTQ+ travellers to Qatar: Qatar criminalises same-sex sexual activity: • Up to 7 years imprisonment under the Penal Code • Sharia law theoretically applies death penalty (not documented as applied in recent years) • Cross-dressing is criminalised • Public displays of affection are illegal During the 2022 World Cup, Qatar made temporary accommodations for foreign LGBTQ+ visitors. Since then, enforcement has tightened. Recent reports include: • Detention of trans individuals at the airport • Phone searches at customs for LGBTQ+ content • Use of Grindr and Hornet for entrapment operations against local nationals No openly LGBTQ+ venues operate in Qatar. If you visit: • Be extremely discreet in all public contexts. • Don't use LGBTQ+ apps within Qatar — phones can be searched. • Stay at international-chain hotels (Hilton, Marriott, Four Seasons). • Don't post LGBTQ+ content on social media while in country. • Western embassies can provide limited help; Doha's gay-friendly venues are entirely private.
