*Gay Liberation* is George Segal's 1980 sculpture inside Christopher Park, across from the Stonewall Inn. Four life-sized figures cast in white patinated bronze: two men standing (one's hand on the other's shoulder), two women seated (one's hand on the other's knee). It is the first permanently sited public sculpture in the world commemorating the LGBTQ+ community. The commission itself has a fraught history. The Mildred Andrews Fund of Cleveland engaged Segal in 1979 to make a piece marking the tenth anniversary of Stonewall; he cast the sculpture in 1980. The intended sites — first Christopher Park itself, then Stanford University, then LA — refused it in turn, on grounds that ranged from artistic ("not distinguished enough") to homophobic ("wrong for a family park"). The sculpture toured storage for twelve years and finally arrived at its original intended location in June 1992, in time for that year's Pride. Segal (1924-2000) was best known for his life-cast plaster figures depicting isolation in urban modernity. *Gay Liberation* uses the same casting technique — the models were live volunteers from the Village — but the figures' pose is affectionate, not isolated. That is the piece's quiet argument. The sculpture stands on a low pedestal at the park's southeast corner. There is no signage explaining it beyond a small pedestal-mounted plaque. Photographers cluster here at golden hour; midday is quiet. Free, open 24/7 as public art in a public park, part of the Stonewall National Monument grounds. Wheelchair accessible.

This work commemorates the Stonewall riots of 1969, which were the starting point of the gay rights movement.

Gay Liberation Monument – This monument appealed to me with its artistic design and powerful message. The sculptures appear realistic and serene, blending naturally into the park setting. It is not only a work of art but also an important symbol of acceptance and equality. I appreciate that it is a public space where history intertwines with the everyday life of the city. A place where one feels comfortable pausing to reflect on its deeper meaning.

Absolutely loved being here — or, at least, loved the parts of it we could actually see through the locked gates. The park was closed because, apparently, the Trump Administration thought funding national parks and celebrating civil rights was a little too fabulous for the federal budget. Still, nothing says “Land of the Free” quite like a barricade around a monument about liberation We made the most of it, though. We lingered outside, reading the plaques and paying our respects to the brave souls who started it all. We took selfies with the statues through the bars like queer zoo exhibits, and chatted with other disappointed visitors. The information inside the visitor center was deeply moving — the kind of history that reminds you how far we’ve come and how fragile progress can be if we stop paying attention. We met other lesbian couples, swapped numbers for hikes and cat-sitting, and left feeling a mix of pride, rage, and gratitude — the holy trinity of queer emotions. This monument matters. It tells a story that must be told, even when the park is closed, because the fight that started here is still going on — just with better haircuts. 10/10 — would be politically defunded here again.
