Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation has been banned in employment since 1996, hate crimes since 2004, and gender identity was added to hate speech law in 2021. Since 2014 legal gender change is by self-declaration from age 18 after a six-month reflection period, with no diagnosis, hormones or surgery, and gender identity was removed from the mental illness list in 2017. Conversion therapy is not banned. Public support for same-sex marriage is above 90 percent. The most notable recent shift is medical: since 2023 Denmark has restricted puberty blockers for minors. Copenhagen has an old, well-established scene around Studiestræde and Vesterbro, hosted WorldPride in 2021, and Aarhus and Odense have their own Pride weeks.
