The Bunk Hostel

I had my first experience staying in a hostel and was pleasantly surprised. It's a shame, however, that there's no room for luggage while the room isn't ready yet...

The hostel's location is great! We were with a large group of students and the owner offered us the ‘worst’ room. In reality, it turned out to be the best, with a private shower, spacious beds, and overall comfort. The owner was a likeable man with a good sense of humor! Highly recommended! ;)

🤮🤮 🤢🤢 😡😡 💢💢 ☹️☹️ 😣😣 💦 I chose this hostel after seeing its overwhelmingly high ratings on Agoda and Google. I arrived around 1 PM, and Agoda indicated that luggage storage was available. However, when I actually got there, it was a ghost hostel. There was no one in the lobby, and the front door was firmly locked. There were several phone numbers written on a piece of paper posted on the door, and I finally managed to get through on the third try. It turned out that the staff only show up at 4 PM. In the end, unable to leave my luggage, I decided to look around the neighborhood. After having dinner, I checked again and found that check-in time was 8 PM. However, no one had informed me, and I hadn't received an email. I checked the app myself, rushed to the hostel, and made a call. Fortunately, I didn't have much luggage, and luckily, a staff member arrived within 10 minutes. The couple waiting with us was also puzzled by this check-in method. After checking in, we were given sheets and duvet covers, but we were told we had to change them ourselves! This was something we could tolerate. However, the biggest problem was the cleanliness. There are only three shared shower rooms, yet there are four rooms on the same floor. It was obvious that on weekends or holidays, you would have to wait in line for a long time just to take a shower. There was mold on the ceiling and it smelled rotten; there were unidentified black stains on the floor and what looked like bloodstains on the walls 🤮. We had to pay 48 euros for this kind of service. It’s to the point where I’m starting to suspect that such high ratings were actually obtained through a deal 😓. And the blackout curtains in the room were only half-effective! For 48 euros, you can be gifted a morning where the sunlight stings your face. ☀️ Wegen der überragend guten Bewertungen auf Agoda und Google habe ich mich für dieses Hostel entschieden. Ich kam gegen 13 Uhr an, und auf Agoda stand, dass man Gepäck abstellen könne. Vor Ort stellte sich jedoch heraus: Es war ein Geister-Hostel. Kein Mensch an der Rezeption, die Haupteingangstür war verschlossen. An der Tür klebte ein Zettel mit mehreren Telefonnummern. Erst beim dritten Versuch ging jemand ran. Es stellte sich heraus, dass das Personal erst um 16 Uhr erscheint – also konnte ich mein Gepäck nicht abstellen. Also bin ich erstmal in der Gegend herumgelaufen. Als ich später zu Abend aß, sah ich, dass der Check-in erst um 20 Uhr möglich ist. Aber niemand hatte mich darüber informiert – keine E-Mail, nichts. Ich habe es selbst in der App gesehen, bin sofort zum Hostel zurück und habe dort angerufen. Zum Glück hatte ich nicht viel Gepäck dabei, und zum Glück war der Mitarbeiter in etwa zehn Minuten da. Mit mir wartete ein Paar, das genauso verwirrt über diesen Check-in-Service war. Nach dem Einchecken bekam ich Bettlaken und Bezüge – ja, Selbstbedienung! Das war fur mich noch akzeptabel. Das Schlimmste war jedoch die Hygiene: Es gibt nur drei Gemeinschaftsduschen für vier Zimmer auf derselben Etage. Am Wochenende oder an Feiertagen kann man demnach lange anstehen. Die Decke im Duschraum war verschimmelt, es roch modrig. Auf dem Boden waren rätselhafte schwarze Flecken, an der Wand etwas, das wie Blutflecken aussah 🤮. Ich habe 48 Euro bezahlt und so einen Service bekommen. Ich frage mich wirklich, ob diese ganzen guten Bewertungen vielleicht gekauft sind 😓. Und der Verdunklungsvorhang im Zimmer war nur halb so lang! Für 48 Euro bekommt man also einen sonnengeküssten Morgen – ganz gratis dazu. ☀️

Cooperative, helpful and friendly staff.

The only positive aspects were the cleanliness and the very central location. However, I still have to leave a negative review because several things during my stay were really frustrating. The reception was almost never staffed, not even during the official opening hours, so if you need assistance it becomes a problem. I had to wait hours for check-in, yet if guests arrive late they are charged an extra €10. That honestly makes no sense. Since there was basically no supervision, the common areas did not feel safe to me as a woman. The entrance door was often left open and anyone could walk in. There were always several men hanging around in the kitchen area and it was not even clear whether they were actual guests. You should provide controlled wristbands or key access, keep the entrance closed, and have a properly functioning reception. Another inconvenient thing, although manageable, is that guests have to make their own beds, and there is no possibility to request a lower bed even for health reasons. On the last day I even had to pay for a locker because I wanted to leave my backpack there for one extra hour before leaving, but since nobody was at reception — despite it being within the stated hours — there was no other option. Overall, it genuinely felt like nobody worked there. It was not professional at all. Also, there were no social activities organized, no WhatsApp group, and no effort whatsoever to help guests meet each other. The atmosphere was very cold, impersonal, and honestly quite depressing for a hostel experience.

Absolutely do not stay here under any circumstances! Upon arrival, they demanded payment for our accommodation, even though we had made the transfer weeks in advance. Only after much back and forth were they able to locate the payment, and we were finally able to access our room. Then came the "surprise": Our room couldn't be locked (the door was clearly broken; the cover for the lock was completely missing), and there were still bags and bed linens left by the previous night's guests. For what was offered, it was completely overpriced – even during a trade fair. Although the staff were very friendly in addressing our concerns, it's unacceptable to receive broken and unprepared rooms. One employee assured us he would check with the manager regarding a partial refund, but despite sending a specific email, we heard absolutely nothing months later. At least our room was changed the following day; otherwise, we would have gone elsewhere immediately. But because of the trade fair, we had neither the time nor the energy for such a hassle. At least our room was replaced the next day; otherwise, we would have gone somewhere else immediately. Great location near the trade fair, but that's no good if everything around it is so wrong and the house is so noisy that you constantly hear a door slamming somewhere.
