Об этом месте Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art

The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to LGBTQ+ art. Its origins are a 1969 SoHo loft-apartment exhibition organised by Charles Leslie and Fritz Lohman in response to the Whitney Museum's refusal to include any openly gay artists in its Contemporary American Artists series. From that one show grew a foundation, then a gallery, and — with a 2016 accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums — a full museum. The permanent collection numbers over 30,000 pieces spanning three centuries: Duncan Grant drawings, Andy Warhol Polaroids, Robert Mapplethorpe prints, Peter Hujar photographs, Bhupen Khakhar paintings, David Wojnarowicz journals, plus a deep archive of male physique magazines (Athletic Model Guild etc.) and hundreds of AIDS-era political posters. Rotating exhibitions typically run two per year in the main gallery plus programming in the Prince Street project space. Admission is by suggested donation ($10). The museum is small — you can see it thoroughly in an hour, or dwell for three. Wheelchair accessible, quiet, well-lit; the gift shop stocks catalogues and artist zines you won't find elsewhere. Regular programming includes artist talks, film screenings and a monthly life-drawing session using queer figure models. Open Wednesday-Sunday 12-6 PM (check leslielohman.org for holiday changes). The closest subway is Prince Street R/W, one block away. Combine with a walk east through SoHo to the Lesbian Herstory Archives on Fulton Street or south to Julius' Bar for a downtown heritage afternoon.

We were very excited to visit, but on our first attempt, the museum wasn't open due to technical difficulties with an installation. We tried again a few days later and, only after responding to the invitation to make a donation and offering a reasonably generous amount did we discover that only one installation was on view and the rest of the galleries were closed. Very disappointing and feeling put out. The limited viewing should have been disclosed and management should do a better job of scheduling the galleries. We wouldn't return or recommend.

This organizations content choices continue to fall. Although years ago they displayed images with extensive import and interest, on this, my second visit in a year, i would characterize the artists creative choices as narcissistic and self indulgent
