Newtown Backpackers

Hi, I'm not a fan of hostels and have only stayed in five so far, but this is by far the most disgusting and run-down one I've ever experienced. I think you'd have better comfort as a homeless person on the streets here. Anyone who puts up with something like this has no interest in comfort.

This is the worst of all the places I've stayed... The location is great and the staff are very friendly, but the facilities are all terrible. I stayed in a women-only 6-person room. I had to shower in a cramped stall that could barely function as a bathroom. Towels cost $2 and a deposit of $10 was required. They don't even provide mattress covers. The room's air conditioner is a portable unit, there's no water purifier, and the kitchen looks like it's going to burst. It's cramped and hot. I tried to borrow a hairdryer, but they said they lost it. The room doesn't have a large window, so there's no ventilation. If you hand-wash, there's no place to hang it. The Wi-Fi cuts off after 9:33 PM.

I lost an earing and I realised it after my check out, so I called the reception to ask if they might have found it, Cedric who attended my call in reception was very helpful and did everything he could to find my earing...so grateful!! Great service from him.

Private room was great, clean and comfortable spacious. Newtown is a great area of Sydney to stay, super cool and close to the city. -1 star for cockroaches… but they were chill and few in number.

I have to do a review here since the one I was typing on Booking finished before I had. The WiFi works whenever it feels like it, but definitely not in the evening, and not in the dining area. The refrigerators have no space, so I couldn't have dinner for any of the nights I stayed. Dry food shelves have also had no space. Some people started placing their food boxes on the floor. The mattress sank in the middle so I didn't sleep well. They allow guests to check in late (like after 10pm), who then disrupt sleeping by turning on lights at 1am. I suppose the hostel can't control how people behave, but it's still frustrating. Guests cannot do laundry until after 2pm. Surely it would make more sense if the hostel did their laundry during the middle of the day when most backpackers aren't around. The kitchen did not have scissors. I did like the size of the lockers and the location. I won't stay here again unless I'm desperate.

The private room was clean , it was quiet of traffic noise, the host was very friendly. The bathroom was disgusting. People were yahooing in the courtyard right outside my window till very late, people coming and going being loud all night. The noise of the shower running at 2.30 in the morning. Great location to amazing food outlets less than a block away.

Amazing hostel, rooms are always cleaned, my room had a private bathroom with toilet and shower. Price is good.

Had a very unpleasant time with the staff. Was treated unfairly. I would not recommend staying here more than 1 or 2 nights
