The People Hostel - Marsilya

The reception staff were very friendly, the facilities were clean, and the room was spacious. Overall, I was satisfied with my stay. However, I encountered a problem on the day of departure. Check-out time was set for 11:00 AM. Yet, at 10:00 AM, a housekeeper entered the room to ask if I was leaving. I told her that I was leaving the hotel that day but would depart at 11:00 AM, in accordance with the check-out time. Despite this, less than 30 minutes later, she returned to begin cleaning. I was in the process of packing my belongings, but she continued cleaning as if I weren't there: she was shaking the sheets over my open suitcase and vacuuming everywhere. I really felt like they were trying to get me to leave as quickly as possible. Perhaps I misinterpreted, but the staff were speaking French amongst themselves. I don't understand French, so I don't know exactly what they were saying, but sometimes the atmosphere alone is enough to make someone uncomfortable. I felt rushed and ended up leaving the room in a hurry. I completely understand that the staff wants to start cleaning quickly, but wouldn't it be better to wait until after 11:00 a.m.? After all, check-out time is at 11:00 a.m. If this could be improved, the experience would be much more pleasant.

Fantastic experience! The hostel is in a great location, super convenient for getting around the city. The atmosphere is really cool and chill, with the bar (pints €5 happy hour) and the open courtyard where you can meet people. The dorms are clean, fairly quiet, and the bedding is very good (private room with curtains, dresser, power outlet, light - locker for storing your belongings, padlock available). Breakfast buffet €9 but includes homemade quiche, fruit, pastries, juice… Special mention to the staff who are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always available to give great tips about Marseille. 😊 In short, excellent value for money. I highly recommend it and I'll definitely be back!

Great location, clean rooms, and good value for money. However, the room was very cold at night because of the central air conditioning. I reported the issue twice, but unfortunately the staff was not very helpful. Overall, a decent stay, but customer service could be improved.

Very pleasant space! I loved it!

The afternoon staff were aggressive and unprofessional, unlike the night staff, who were much more respectful and professional. The rooms I was given were not comfortable at all, with an atmosphere and conditions that were difficult to tolerate for a room that was, in fact, more expensive. I also found it strange that some travelers with very similar profiles (North Africans) were grouped together in the same rooms. Furthermore, some guests seemed to regularly receive complimentary drinks from the staff. Apparently, all it took was being friendly with certain receptionists to get perks, which created a feeling of injustice for other guests who paid normally. Frankly, you might as well eat out. The breakfast was very disappointing and consisted largely of frozen products. Finally, I overheard staff members speaking disrespectfully about certain guests behind their backs, which unfortunately confirms the general lack of professionalism I experienced during my stay.

This place could be amazing but there are some problems especially if it's packed. The tea kettle needs to be replaced. There should be a way to get water to drink automatically rather than having to go to the bar (bartenders don't seem too enthusiastic about filling up your bottle). There is no place to recycle glass bottles!
