This is a difficult hotel to review because some aspects deserve 5 stars, while others deserve 1 star. The resort itself is impressive. It’s the largest resort in Honolulu and unlike anything else in Waikiki, with eight towers, several pools, its own lagoon, restaurants, shops, live music, and direct beach access. The beach is beautiful, has much more sand than Waikiki Beach, and generally feels less crowded. Unfortunately, my stay in the Diamond Head Tower completely changed my opinion of this resort. Had I stayed in one of the newer towers, I suspect my experience would have been very different. I knew the Diamond Tower was one of the older buildings, but I expected it to meet the quality standards of a Hilton property. Instead, I was shocked. I promise budget motels have cleaner and better-maintained rooms. It is unbelievable that Hilton continues charging premium prices for a tower that appears not to have been renovated in decades. The room was in unacceptable condition. When I checked in, there was a stain in the toilet, the furniture was old, worn, and dusty, and the carpet had not been properly vacuumed, with hair visible throughout the room. I requested housekeeping twice, yet the toilet stain remained and I had to clean it. Even worse, every night I found small black bugs on the bathroom floor that I had to kill. I also had to call maintenance almost every day. One day the safety lock stopped working, another day the air conditioning failed, and the bathroom exhaust fan never worked during my entire stay. When maintenance opened the air conditioning vent, I was horrified. The air filter looked like it had not been replaced in years, completely covered in dirt and dust. The room also stayed around 70°F even though I repeatedly set it to 72°F. Both my wife and I developed a cold and were congested during our stay, and I’m pretty sure it was because of that a/c. The room was so unpleasant that we tried to spend as little time there as possible, leaving early every morning and returning only late at night to sleep. Another major disappointment was the resort’s management of its pools. During the busiest time of year, in the middle of summer in Hawaii, the Paradise Pool, which is the main family pool with the slides and both hot tubs, only operates from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Even more surprising, they only staff one waterslide at a time. One slide operates from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, then the lifeguard moves to the other slide from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, meaning both slides are never open simultaneously. For a resort of this size and price, this makes no sense. There are also no umbrellas in the pools. You’re telling me they can’t afford more lifeguards or umbrellas?! Finding seating around the pools is another challenge. Unless you arrive very early in the morning, it’s almost impossible to find chairs. Even more surprising, there are no umbrellas around the pools, leaving no shade despite the intense Hawaiian sun. For a resort with thousands of guests, this is difficult to understand. The same issue extends to the beach. Complimentary beach chairs are not provided, and rentals are extremely expensive. Kayaks and paddleboards are also very expensive, and food and drinks throughout the resort are very expensive. On top of that, nearly every purchase or service comes with suggested gratuities of 20–25%, and they carge $55 per day of “resorts fees” making an already expensive stay feel even more costly. To make matters worse, I called the front desk to complain, and rather than showing concern or trying to resolve the situation, I was quickly told they would “let the manager know,” and they hanged up on me. If you’re using Uber or shuttles, pickups and drop-offs are not allowed directly at the main lobby, requiring a fairly long walk with luggage. Avoid the Diamond tower at all costs. It’s ridiculous that Hilton charges so much for rooms that fall so far below the standard guests expect from the Hilton brand.
