Kansas City Pride is the annual LGBTQ+ Pride celebration for the Kansas City metropolitan area, held each June at Penn Valley Park on the south edge of downtown Kansas City. The event draws approximately 30,000 people and has been a fixture of the city's LGBTQ+ community calendar for decades, growing steadily in both scale and visibility. Penn Valley Park provides a large and beautiful outdoor venue for the festival: the park's open meadows accommodate the main stage, the vendor areas, and the crowd with room for the kind of relaxed movement between areas that outdoor Pride festivals require. The downtown-adjacent location means that Kansas City's bar scene — the 39th Street corridor, Westport, and The Bolt downtown — is easily accessible before and after the main festival events. Missie B's and the other 39th Street venues host associated Pride parties throughout the weekend, and the combination of the festival and the bar scene gives Kansas City Pride a full-weekend character that makes it worth planning a dedicated trip around. The June timing coincides with barbecue season in Kansas City, and the combination of Pride and the city's signature food culture — a trip to Joe's Kansas City or Q39 alongside the Pride festivities — makes for a genuinely excellent long weekend.
