San Francisco Proper Hotel

I stayed at the Proper when it first opened - I actually just edited my review from 8 years ago to write this one. The neighborhood was manageable then, but today, it is genuinely terrifying. To be fair, the hotel's interior is nice and offers a safe haven once you are inside. This said , for the premium prices Marriott charges, parts of the rooms are starting to feel noticeably worn and not up to the standard the hotel used to hold. Dealbreaker though, the location. The immediate surrounding area is an open-air drug market with active drug use, severe homelessness, and incredibly unsanitary conditions right outside the doors. You simply cannot safely walk around the area, whether it is day or night. I tried to walk to find dinner the first night and had to retreat back to the hotel and order delivery. It is shocking that Marriott charges such high rates for a property where guests essentially cannot safely leave the building on foot. Despite the nice design, I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone and won’t stay here again.

Very rough neighborhood would not want to walk around the area. Parking is very expensive at 120 a night.

Loved our stay at the San Francisco Proper Hotel! We came into the city for a girls’ trip over spring break (teachers off duty!) and it was the perfect spot. The staff were so friendly and welcoming—Brady especially went out of his way to make sure everything felt thoughtful and taken care of, which really made our stay stand out. The rooftop bar was such a highlight—great energy, beautiful views, and the food was fantastic. We especially enjoyed the oysters and sliders. The whole place has that effortlessly cool, cozy feel that makes you want to linger a little longer. Looking forward to staying there again!

I went to the rooftop the view is beautiful the location is bad because around the hotel are to many homeless you can't walk around.

Good service but a very unnecessary $50 “destination fee” to use a gym and get a welcome drink, no bonvoy benefits, bad service on the roof. Had an issue with the destination fee - you literally get nothing and this is a non resort vibe, it feels like a money grab for a struggling and outdated hotel chain… I loved the SOMA location but it will feel unsafe for tourists/first timers in SF

My first time staying at the hotel, I’ve been to the rooftop before but overwhelmingly pleased! Hotel is vibey, chic & clean! Front desk: Katrina during the day so nice & welcoming! Jayden at night, easily became my new BFF - simply amazing!! Jon, 2nd bestie!! Welcome glass of champagne is always a nice touch! Room service: super yummy & quick! The lady that brought my bfast every morning was so kind :) the bacon is one of the best I’ve ever had in my life. The yogurt parfait is fire. Pro tip: use Chase Edit for perks! Restaurant: really yummy, Theresa is my girl- she is lovely!! Room: clean & comfy w/ Aesop - fire! Plus super comfy Parachute ropes! Rooftop: we don’t have many in SF, Charmaine’s is def a vibe! Firepits & all. I love Taylor who checks in + Reggie & Welmerson so nice! Gym: legit!!! No windows but let’s not be too picky, they have really nice new equipment, all the essentials & more Location: as an SF native, it’s actually cleaned up a lot! Not nearly as rough as it used to be. Only a bit annoying getting to Union Square/DT but can’t blame the hotel for that! Def going to be my new spot & recco for friends :)

The rooms are tiny, couch was ripped, wallpaper falling off. Location is very sketch and you really can't walk anywhere near there and feel safe. The rooftop bar is the only thing they have going for them but they don't even let hotel guests enjoy it during the day. They make you sit outside on a patio on Market St. We're coming back to the city and attending a show right there but opting to stay in another neighborhood because it's too expensive for the quality.

I haven’t stayed in a room but I did visit the hotel during a recent conference. I thought it seemed like a nice hotel with friendly staff, however it is located in a very dubious area! I was quite surprised as it’s almost surrounded. I would advise anyone visiting to take caution as they enter/leave.
