What reviewers say

Visitors frequently praise the hotel's exceptionally friendly and helpful staff, beautiful design, and comfortable rooms. However, a significant number of guests express strong dissatisfaction with the hotel's surrounding neighborhood, describing it as unpleasant and potentially unsafe, which detracts from the overall experience despite the positive aspects of the hotel itself. Some also mention issues with room amenities like inconsistent temperature control and low shower pressure, and the front desk being difficult to reach.

I travel to San Francisco frequently. This was my first stay at Proper. I will be back! An absolutely beautiful property! The best and cosiest rooftop in SF! Simple menus with GREAT food. Highly recommend rhe chicken chimichurri skewers. Great wine selection. Rooms are small in this historical building, but very nice. THE MOST COMFORTABLE BED of any Marriott I've stayed at. Downside is the neighborhood. Stay on Market Street at night and you'll be fine. The F Street car stops are right outside the hotel on Market. 2 blocks away, expect to see open air drug use and homeless drug zombies. So much of San Francisco has cleaned up...Hopefully the city improves the Tenderloin neighborhood as well.

From the moment we arrived, the experience was seamless. The front desk staff greeted us with champagne and had our bags brought directly to the room. A small touch, but it set the tone well. The building itself is a standout. It is a beautifully preserved historic structure with decor that feels intentional and well-executed throughout. Our room was comfortable and well-appointed. The bed was excellent, and the shower deserves its own mention: strong rainfall pressure, consistently hot water, and high-quality shampoo, conditioner, and body wash that made it hard to step out. The one issue we encountered was a non-functioning air conditioning unit in our room. The hotel attempted a repair, but it could not be resolved. What they did next stood out: they comped the night without hesitation. That response turned a frustrating situation into a demonstration of genuine hospitality. Overall, San Francisco Proper delivers on its reputation. The service, the atmosphere, and the accommodations are all at a high level. The AC situation was a hiccup, but the way it was handled reflects well on the property. Would recommend without reservation.

Let me be very clear: there is virtually no customer service here, from the valet to the front desk. Every request takes more than 30 minutes to be addressed, if it is handled at all. When I asked why the delays were so excessive, the response was simply that they were understaffed. If basic service and responsiveness are important to you, I would strongly recommend reconsidering staying here.

The only item lacking - rooftop bar food. Every element of this hotel intentional in form and function - clever and whimsically sophisticated. Interesting to have the food be sub par in an upscale food city. That said - wouldn’t keep us from coming back. Great location and loved the design and service.
