Cape Town's gay bar scene is small and honest about it: a handful of bars in De Waterkant, a drag-led queer bar in District Six, a queer bar in Observatory and a club in Parow. Several names that older guides still list have closed, so here's what is actually open in 2026.
De Waterkant
Café Manhattan (74 Waterkant Street) opened in 1994, and in July 2026 Time Out called it Africa's oldest queer bar. It's a restaurant and bar in one, open daily from noon, and most nights in the village start here.
Crew Bar is the main gay bar and club in the village. It has moved from Napier Street to Cobern Street (Google lists number 10). Travel Gay and TravelPulse describe drag, karaoke and go-go nights, plus Kong, a quieter room upstairs. It's open nightly from 18:00 to 02:00, and it's busiest late on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Pink Candy Night Club (120 Strand Street, formerly the Pink Panther) is the weekend dance club, open Friday and Saturday from 21:00 to 04:00. It joined Café Manhattan on Time Out's 2026 list of the world's greatest queer venues.
Beyond the village
Zer021 Social Club moved to 46 Canterbury Street in District Six. It's a drag-led queer bar with a mixed crowd, open Thursday to Sunday from 20:00, and it hosted Cape Town Pride's official Pride Ball in February 2026.
Duchess Lounge (123 Lower Main Road, Observatory) is a queer bar popular with queer women. It ran official Pride karaoke and drag-comedy nights in 2026 and is closed on Mondays.
EVOL (69 Hope Street, Gardens) isn't a gay bar, but it's where much of the city's underground queer party scene happens, with collectives such as Bathhouse and Death of Glitter. It opens for events, so check its listings.
Stargayzer in Parow, about 15 km out in the northern suburbs, is a no-frills local gay club open on Friday and Saturday nights.
Closed or changed
- Beefcakes (Somerset Road): closed around 2024.
- Beaulah (Somerset Road): no activity found in 2025 or 2026, and other businesses now trade at the address.
- The Crow Bar (Waterkant Street): closed in July 2024.
- Navigaytion, The Bronx, Bar Code / Versatile and Amsterdam Action Bar: closed.
Tips
Start at Café Manhattan, move to Crew Bar, and finish at The Pink Candy on a Friday or Saturday. Take Uber or Bolt between venues and back to your hotel instead of walking at night, even for short hops. Cape Town Pride (5-28 February 2027, parade on Saturday 27 February) is the busiest time of year, when the bars fill up and Pride runs its own parties.
