Late afternoon on the Atlantic side of the mountain: the granite boulders of Clifton are still warm, the Atlantic is cold enough to make you gasp, and the chilled chenin blanc waits for a terrace later, because alcohol is banned on the city's beaches. Up the coast the south-easter, the "Cape Doctor", whips sand along the path to Sandy Bay, while over in Observatory the bars of Lower Main Road fill with students and the smell of the braai. Cape Town is one of Africa's best-known gay destinations, but its cruising scene is small and, these days, mostly indoors. There is one dedicated venue, Shaft Cruise Zone in Observatory; the old De Waterkant sauna has closed; and the beach long known for naked sunbathing, Sandy Bay, now has signs warning of fines for nudity and "sexual misconduct".

Legal in one line: South Africa's 1996 Constitution bans discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, the Constitutional Court struck down the sodomy laws in 1998, and same-sex couples have been able to marry since 2006. Cruise clubs are legal private venues for adults; sex in public places is not legal for anyone (see the law box below).

Indoors: Shaft Cruise Zone, Observatory

Shaft Cruise Zone is at 299 Lower Main Road, Observatory, in "Obs", the bohemian student neighbourhood east of the city centre, not in De Waterkant. It is strictly 18+ and men-only. Travel Gay lists a bar and steam room, two video lounges, glory holes, a sling, a cruising maze, a "Peeping Tom" room and a sundeck, plus luxury en-suite cabins to rent and tantric massage. Nudity is expected: you sign in, get an armband, a locker, condoms and lube, and leave your clothes behind.

Hours (as listed by Travel Gay and on the venue's website): Sunday to Thursday 12:00–00:00, Friday and Saturday 12:00–02:00. The website said there are no new entries in the last hour.

Prices (as listed on the website in 2026): R150 before 18:00, R190 after, buddy deals for two or more arriving together, and R120 for students with a valid card. It takes cash and Visa or Mastercard. Deals and themed nights change, so check its social media before you go.

What to expect: recent Google reviews are mixed. Fans mention a clean steam room, a relaxed and diverse crowd and busy weekends; others complain about curt staff, parking and, in a few cases, mishandled belongings. Bring flip-flops, carry as little as possible and keep your locker key on your wrist.

Getting there: take an Uber or a metered taxi to the door and back. Don't walk between De Waterkant and Observatory at night.

Before you go: drinks in De Waterkant

The evening often starts in De Waterkant, the small gay village of cobbled lanes and pastel cottages beside the Bo-Kaap. Crew Bar (now on Cobern Street, with drag, karaoke and go-go nights according to TravelPulse) and Café Manhattan are bars, not cruise venues, and we found no De Waterkant bar with a darkroom in 2025–26. Have a drink, then take a car across town.

Closed: Hot House Steam & Leisure, 18 Jarvis Street, De Waterkant, long described as Cape Town's gay sauna, is listed as closed by misterb&b and has not reopened.

Not found: we found no independent trace of a venue called Wet Warehouse, or of a gay cruising scene on the Bloubergstrand beachfront, in 2025–26. Don't plan a trip around either.

Outdoors: the beaches

Cape Town's gay beach life is about sun, sea and people-watching. Both beaches below are public places in or next to Table Mountain National Park, with families, surfers and rangers around. Read the law box before you go.

Clifton 3rd Beach

The four Clifton beaches sit in sheltered coves below Victoria Road, between Sea Point and Camps Bay, reached by steps down from the road. Lonely Planet calls 3rd Beach the prettiest of them and notes it is popular with the Capetonian gay crowd, though plenty of straight people come too. Travel Gay describes it as a busy gay beach and meeting spot. It's a place to sunbathe, swim and meet people, not a cruising ground: swimwear stays on, and the beach is busiest on summer weekends.

Sandy Bay

Sandy Bay lies inside the Table Mountain National Park reserve south of Llandudno, on the coast road between Camps Bay and Hout Bay. There's no vehicle access: the Llandudno residents' association describes a walk of about 1.5 km along the coast from Llandudno, or a steep descent over dunes and scrub from Kronenzicht in Hout Bay. There are no bins and no facilities, so take water, sun protection and your rubbish home. For decades it was known as Cape Town's unofficial naturist beach, with a gay following.

That has changed in 2026:

    • In March 2026 SANParks said Sandy Bay "is not, and has not been, formally designated as a naturist beach", after meeting the City, law enforcement and local safety groups about "various unlawful activities" in the area.
    • By September 2026 signs on the walkway from the Llandudno parking area read "No nudity and/or sexual misconduct in any public space, including the beaches and pathways", warned of fines under Section 19 of the Sexual Offences Act and said the area is under surveillance, including drones.
    • A resident quoted by EWN said her complaint was about sexual activity in the dunes and among the rocks, not about nudism. Naturist associations dispute the nudity ban and have said they support enforcement against sexual misconduct.

Our advice: don't go into the dunes at all. They are where both risks meet. Enforcement is aimed precisely there, with patrols, cameras, drones and fines for sexual misconduct, and a hollow out of sight of the beach is also where a mugger can catch you alone. Stay on the open sand, in swimwear and in daylight.

The law on public sex in South Africa. Sex between men is legal, with an equal age of consent of 16. Sex in public is not. The Sexual Offences Act of 1957 is still in force in part: Section 19 makes it an offence to entice or solicit in a public place "for immoral purposes" or to expose yourself in public in an indecent manner, and Section 20 covers indecent acts with another person in public. Public indecency is also a crime under South African common law. Beaches, park trails, car parks and shopping-centre toilets are all public places. Nudity at Sandy Bay is disputed; sex there is not.

Safety outdoors. The Llandudno residents' association warns of security risks on the Sandy Bay path and advises staying alert for muggers. Go in daylight, with friends, and come back well before dark. Carry only what you need: no expensive watch, a cheap phone if you have one, a little cash. Leave nothing in the car, not even in the boot: smash-and-grab and car break-ins are a known problem in Cape Town, and cars parked at beaches and trailheads are easy targets. Don't go into the dunes or bushes, alone or with strangers, and be wary of anyone who follows you off the path.

Table Mountain and Lion's Head trails carry the same risk. In January 2026 three armed men attacked and robbed a couple on The Glen trail near Kloof Nek, stabbing one of them. SANParks says reported robberies have fallen since mid-2025, after arrests and more ranger patrols, but hike in a group, stick to busy routes and start early. In an emergency call 10111 (police) or 112 from a mobile.

We don't list shopping-centre toilets or car parks: they're public places, security staff patrol them, and getting caught there means a criminal charge.

    Local colour

Cape Town eats outdoors. On a Sunday morning in the Bo-Kaap, look for a koesister: the Cape Malay version of the doughnut, spiced with cinnamon, cardamom and aniseed, dipped in syrup and rolled in coconut (not to be confused with the plaited Afrikaner koeksister). Later, watch the sun drop into the Atlantic from the warm granite at Clifton or from Signal Hill, but save the wine for a bar or restaurant: the City's coastal by-law bans alcohol on beaches, and in December 2025 it warned that drinks can be confiscated and drinkers fined R500. If you're invited to a braai (barbecue) say yes and bring something to drink. Late at night, the classic fuel is a Gatsby, a long roll stuffed with hot chips, meat and sauce, made to be shared; Rashaad Pandy of Super Fisheries in Athlone says he invented it by accident one night in 1976, and you'll find it across the Cape Flats and in Obs.

    Practical tips

    • Getting around at night: take an Uber door to door, even for short hops between bars, Shaft and your hotel. Wait inside until the car arrives and check the number plate and driver before you get in.
    • MyCiTi buses: the city's bus network runs from early morning into the evening, not through the night. You pay with a myconnect card tapped at the gate, and routes link the Civic Centre with the V&A Waterfront, Green Point, Sea Point, Camps Bay and Hout Bay; the A01 runs to the airport. Use the MyCiTi journey planner for the Atlantic seaboard beaches, and an Uber for Llandudno and Observatory.
    • Money: prices are in rand (R). Cards are widely accepted, including at Shaft; keep some cash for car guards and small shops.
    • Apps: Grindr is widely used. Meet new contacts in a public place first and tell a friend where you're going.
    • Health: Health4Men offers sexual-health services for men who have sex with men. The Triangle Project supports the wider LGBTQ+ community.
    • Season: beach weather runs roughly from November to April, with the busiest weeks around Christmas and Pride in February. Winter (June to August) brings rain and cold water.

    Cape Town Pride

The 2026 Cape Town Pride festival ran from 5 February to 1 March 2026 under the theme "I Am Because We Are", inspired by ubuntu. The parade left Alfred Street in De Waterkant at 11:00 on Saturday 28 February and marched along Somerset Road into Green Point, where the Mardi Gras party took over the afternoon. For 2027, Cape Town Pride has announced a festival from 5 to 28 February, with the parade and Mardi Gras on Saturday 27 February; check cptpride.org before you book. Looking further ahead, Cape Town Pride won the InterPride members' vote in November 2024 to host WorldPride 2028, the first WorldPride in Africa. The organisers currently give 30 September to 14 October 2028; treat the dates as provisional and check cptpride.org nearer the time.
