Sandy Bay Beach is Cape Town’s main gay beach, known for its privacy and seclusion.
You’ll find Sandy Bay in the Western Cape, surrounded by mountains. It’s a quiet spot, with clear water and plenty of natural scenery. It feels miles from the city, but you can still get there easily enough from central Cape Town.
The crowd is a real mix of ages, reflecting the wider LGBTQ+ community. This makes for a pretty relaxed, welcoming vibe, whether you’re there to swim, sunbathe, or just hang out in a gay-friendly space. It’s a natural setting that draws a lot of travelers.
Just like any beach, keep an eye on local conditions. But between the mountains, the views, and its established reputation, Sandy Bay is a solid stop for LGBTQ+ travelers in Cape Town.

A phenomenal bay perfect for hiking, swimming, or simply relaxing and enjoying the sound of the waves. From Llandudno, you can easily walk to the beach in 15 minutes. Along the way, large rocks invite you to climb. There are two parking lots in Llandudno; if you use the first one further up the hill, you'll need to descend some stairs. The lower parking lot is the starting point for the Sandy Bay hiking trail.
It's best not to expect anything. It's more than a 20-minute walk from the parking lot. The round trip alone is very tiring. About 90% of the people you'll find there are elderly men. There's no point in going there expecting anything.
