Late afternoon on the Maidan: cricket matches overlapping on the dry grass, yellow taxis crawling along Chowringhee, a man selling jhalmuri (puffed rice tossed with mustard oil, chilli and onion) from a tin, and the white dome of the Victoria Memorial going gold as the light drops. Kolkata is a city that lives outdoors and talks for hours, and it has been more open about queer life than most of India since its first Pride walk in 1999. But cruising, in the sense of a sauna, a darkroom or a cruise bar, does not exist here. The single place in our listings is an old north Kolkata cinema whose status we could not confirm, and the open spaces with an older reputation are public, patrolled and a favourite hunting ground for extortionists. The honest summary: in Kolkata men meet on apps and on nights out, and that is the safer way to do it.
Legal in one line: sex between consenting adult men has been legal in India since the Supreme Court's 2018 Navtej Singh Johar judgment, but only in private; an obscene act in a public place, whether a park, a lakeside, a toilet or a cinema hall, is a criminal offence under Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which replaced Section 294 of the old Indian Penal Code on 1 July 2024 and carries up to three months in prison, a fine of up to ₹1,000, or both. Same-sex marriage and civil unions are not recognised.
How it works in Kolkata
There is no gay sauna in Kolkata. We found no bathhouse, cruise club, darkroom bar or sex club for men operating in the city in 2026, in English or Bengali sources. The saunas you will see advertised belong to hotel spas and gyms; they are mixed, staffed and not meeting places.
What Kolkata has instead is a social scene. Gay-friendly nights out are concentrated at The Park, 17 Park Street, and queer pop-up parties and community events are announced on Instagram; see our guide to gay bars in Kolkata. Day to day, most men meet through Grindr and similar apps, and that is where the city's biggest risk now sits (see the safety box below).
Chaya Cinema, north Kolkata
Chaya (Chhaya) Cinema is the only place in our Kolkata cruising listings. It is a single-screen hall at 122 Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road (the old Upper Circular Road), near the Maniktala crossing. According to the Bengal Film Archive it opened in 1934, was named by Abanindranath Tagore, and in its most recent profile was showing censored adult films at four shows a day, with tickets at ₹50, to a small local, working-class audience. Utopia, a long-running Asian gay travel directory, listed it as a cruising venue a decade ago (entry verified April 2014); nothing about the hall itself is gay, and families come for the films too.
Status unconfirmed. The Bengal Film Archive lists Chhaya as open, but its profile is undated, and at least one visitor review says the hall has closed. Our searches in English and Bengali in October 2026 found no news of either a closure or a reopening. Ask a shopkeeper on APC Road, or call the hall on 033 2350 1382, before you go. Anything sexual in a cinema is a public act under BNS s.296. Our Chaya Cinema page has the full history, the safety detail and what to see in the neighbourhood by day.

Outdoors: the Maidan and the lakes
Older gay listings for Kolkata, including some on this site, mention informal cruising in parks and around the Maidan. Here is what we can say about these areas, and what we cannot.
The Maidan
The Maidan is the city's great central open space, about 400 hectares stretching from the Hooghly River to Chowringhee and Park Street, with the Victoria Memorial at its southern end and Eden Gardens and Raj Bhavan to the north. Fort William, headquarters of the Indian Army's Eastern Command and closed to the public, stands within it. The Esplanade, Park Street, Maidan and Rabindra Sadan metro stations run along its eastern edge. By day it is busy with cricket, football, walkers and families. We found no current independent source describing it as a gay meeting place, so we give no directions; treat its reputation as historical.
Rabindra Sarobar (Dhakuria Lake)
Rabindra Sarobar, still often called Dhakuria Lake, is a 192-acre lake and wooded park in south Kolkata, beside the metro station of the same name, popular with morning walkers, rowers and birdwatchers. In a 2018 VICE feature on how gay men in Kolkata meet, men named the lake area among the places they had met others and described it as very dark after sunset. That is an eight-year-old account, not a current listing, and the lake is a busy public park with families and early-morning walkers.
Outdoors, the risks are real.
- The law: any sexual act in a park, by a lake or in a public toilet falls under BNS s.296. Being gay is legal; doing it in public is not.
- Fake police: a common Indian trap is a man who suddenly "arrests" you, or a group who claim to be police, and offer to let you go for cash. In June 2026 Gujarat police arrested seven men who used a gay dating app to lure men to secluded spots, where gang members posing as police officers, relatives or vigilantes threatened them with criminal cases and exposure and took cash, online transfers and valuables. Real police carry ID and do not settle matters for money on the spot; ask for the police station, not a payment.
- Robbery: dark, empty open spaces are where you are easiest to rob. Carry a little cash, a basic phone and no passport, and leave cards and valuables at your hotel.
- Daylight-aware: the Maidan and the lakes are pleasant in the daytime and early evening, when they are full of people. Do not linger in unlit corners after dark, and book an app cab home rather than walking out to a deserted road.
- Getting around: the metro is cheap and efficient, with stations along the Maidan and at Rabindra Sarobar, but it closes long before the clubs do, so check the last trains in the Metro Railway Kolkata app. Late at night, use Uber or Ola, or the West Bengal government's Yatri Sathi app, which books the city's yellow taxis.
- Money: UPI payments usually need an Indian bank account, so carry some rupees in cash, but only what you need for the evening.
- Apps: Grindr is widely used. Read both warning boxes above and follow them on every app.
- Hotels: some budget hotels restrict visitors to rooms or ask for guests' ID. Big chains are usually relaxed; ask before you book if it matters.
- Discretion: public displays of affection, gay or straight, draw stares across India.
- Health: PEP must be started within 72 hours; the emergency department of a large private hospital is the quickest place to ask. If you use PrEP, bring enough for the trip.
- Emergencies: 112 is India's single emergency number.
- Maidan (ময়দান) – open ground; also the name of Kolkata's great central park.
- Sarobar (সরোবর) – lake.
- Pulish (পুলিশ) – police. Thana kothay? (থানা কোথায়?) – where is the police station?
- Na, dhonnobad (না, ধন্যবাদ) – no, thank you.
- Amake chhere din (আমাকে ছেড়ে দিন) – leave me alone.
- Dada (দাদা) – "big brother", the polite way to address a man you don't know.
- Somokami (সমকামী) – gay, homosexual (formal).
App extortion is real here. In July 2025 Kolkata Police arrested three men after a man met a match from Grindr at a flat on Ballygunge Circular Road: accomplices took intimate photos, threatened to expose him and extorted almost ₹97,000 in instalments. Similar gangs have been broken up in other Indian states. Chat for a while, video-call first, meet in a busy public place such as a Park Street café, and never go to an address a stranger chooses. If it happens, report it: police have acted on these cases.
The better choice: Park Street
If what you want is to meet men in Kolkata, go to Park Street, where nobody needs to hide. Inside The Park hotel, Tantra (nightclub, from 19:00, Wednesday to Sunday), Roxy (cocktail lounge, from 18:00) and Someplace Else (live-music pub, from 12:00) are long-standing gay-friendly venues. Kitty Su runs occasional queer pop-ups and drag nights at The Lalit Great Eastern in BBD Bagh, often with the collective Pink Parties Kolkata. Clubs often turn away or surcharge single men at weekends ("stag entry"); a mixed group or a queer pop-up night gets round it. The bars guide has the details.
A Kolkata evening
Do the Maidan the way locals do: in the late afternoon, with a paper cone of jhalmuri or a plate of phuchka (crisp shells filled with spiced potato and tamarind water), watching the cricket and the light on the Victoria Memorial. Walk up to Park Street as the evening starts, eat a kathi roll, then go on to Roxy or a band at Someplace Else. Kolkata's favourite pastime is adda, long, unhurried conversation over tea, and it is a better way into the city's gay life than any park bench.
Practical tips
Kolkata Pride
The Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk began as the Friendship Walk on 2 July 1999 and has been held every December since 2015. The 2025 walk took place on a Saturday in late December 2025: thousands marched from Jatin Moitra Park, near Girish Park metro station, along Chittaranjan Avenue to Esplanade's Y Channel, on the edge of the Maidan. The 2026 walk is expected in December again; check the Kolkata Rainbow Pride Festival's social media for the date, and see our Pride Walk page.

Frequently asked questions
Is there gay cruising in Kolkata?
Not in any organised form. There is no cruise club, darkroom bar or gay sauna, and most men meet through apps or on gay-friendly nights out around Park Street. The places with an older cruising reputation are an old cinema and public open spaces, all of them risky.
Is there a gay sauna in Kolkata?
No. We found no gay sauna or bathhouse operating in Kolkata in 2026. Hotel and spa saunas are ordinary mixed facilities, not meeting places.
Is Chaya Cinema in Kolkata still open?
We could not confirm it in October 2026. The Bengal Film Archive lists the hall as open, but some visitor reviews say it has closed, so ask locally before making the trip.
Is cruising in parks legal in India?
No. Sex between men is legal in private, but an obscene act in a public place is an offence under Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, punishable by up to three months in prison, a fine of up to ₹1,000, or both.
How do I stay safe meeting men in Kolkata?
Video-call before you meet, choose a busy public place such as a Park Street café, and never go on to an address a stranger picks. Be wary of anyone who suddenly claims to be police and demands money: report it rather than pay.
