Одностатеві шлюби легалізовано у 2024 році, вони набули чинності у січні 2025 року. Загалом суспільство толерантне, хоча формальні правові гарантії залишаються обмеженими.
The honest summary: Chiang Mai has a small, real gay scene with no gay street. It is a handful of bars in three pockets, nightly drag cabaret, one gay sauna that local guides still confirm, and a Pride parade in late May that has become one of the first in Thailand's Pride season. The busiest pocket is Charoen Prathet Soi 6 behind the Night Bazaar, where Ram Bar's cabaret anchors a short row of beer bars. Adam's Apple Club, a go-go and show bar that has been running for more than 30 years, is north of the old city in Chang Phueak. BLOW CNX is the gay bar on the Nimman side. Most places close around 1am. If you come expecting Bangkok's Silom, you will be disappointed; if you want a relaxed week of temples, food and a few good nights out, it works well.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Thailand since 23 January 2025, the first country in Southeast Asia to allow it. The 2015 Gender Equality Act bans discrimination based on gender expression, but trans people still cannot change the gender marker on their documents.
The three pockets
1. Night Bazaar and Charoen Prathet Soi 6. The lane runs off Chang Klan Road through the Kalare Night Bazaar towards the river, opposite Le Méridien. Ram Bar sits at the river end, Connections and Orion are along the lane, and the 6ixcret Show cabaret is upstairs in the Night Bazaar Building around the corner. Chiang Mai 19 Bar is a casual outdoor bar in the same block. This is the easiest area for a first night: everything is within a five-minute walk.
2. Chang Phueak, Santitham and Viangbua Road, north of the old city. This is the older, more Thai side of the scene. Adam's Apple Club is in the Lotus Hotel complex on Viangbua Road, and New Circle Club, a host bar with dancers, is on Soi Arawan nearby. Most of the city's gay massage shops are in this area and around Santitham.
3. Nimman. BLOW CNX on Soi Sai Nam Phueng draws a younger, mostly Thai crowd, with DJs and drag shows on Thursdays and Saturdays. Inside the old city, Sapphic Riot on Singharat Road is the city's lesbian and WLW bar, and Sound Up on Moon Muang Soi 2 is a mainstream dance club that gay guides list for Saturday nights.
Bars, shows and clubs
Ram Bar, 48 Charoen Prathet Road (Soi 6). Open about 7pm to 1am every night. The drag cabaret starts between 8pm and 10pm depending on the source and runs to about 11:30pm. Entry is free; you pay for drinks. It is the one bar everyone ends up at, and it draws gay visitors, expats and straight tourists who come for the show.
Adam's Apple Club, Lotus Hotel complex, Viangbua Road. Its own site describes it as a male go-go, host and show club, open 9pm to 1am with a show at 10pm. Dancers work the room, and drinks bought for staff and "off" fees are how it makes money. Ask what things cost before you order.
6ixcret Show, Night Bazaar Building, second floor. Drag cabaret, doors around 7pm and show about 9:30pm. It lost its first lease in January 2021 and reopened here. One 2026 guide listed it as closed while its Google reviews kept arriving, so check its Facebook page on the day.
BLOW CNX, Soi Sai Nam Phueng, Nimman. Gay bar with a nightly DJ, drag on Thursdays and Saturdays, roughly 6pm to 1am, closed Wednesdays.
Connections, 89/2 Kalare Night Bazaar, Charoen Prathet Soi 6. A smoke-free chat bar that moved here in late 2024 and opens daily from 6pm, according to its own website.
Orion Bar, Charoen Prathet Soi 6. Small open-air beer bar, roughly 5pm to midnight. Ignore the old Moon Muang Road address that still circulates.
New Circle Club, 161/7-8 Soi Arawan. Formerly Circle Pub. Travel Gay lists it as a host bar with dancers, open 8pm to 1am.
Sapphic Riot, 56/1 Singharat Road. Time Out Chiang Mai calls it the city's only official lesbian and queer space. It is queer-owned and runs WLW hangouts.
Two tourist cabarets with transgender casts also run nightly: Siam Dragon Show at 12 Huay Kaew Road (8pm, about 70 minutes) and Miracle Cabaret at 177 Chang Phueak Road (8:30pm). They are ticketed theatre shows, not gay bars.
Club One Seven, 385/2 Charoen Prathet Road, on the Ping River. The sauna inside this gay men's hotel is the only gay sauna that gay-in-chiangmai.com still lists as open, and non-guests can use it. It has a pool, gym, herbal steam room, dry sauna, darkroom and cabins. Hours are noon or 4pm to midnight depending on the source. Towels cost extra, and recent reviews say the facilities are tired.
Kaikan CNX, 244 Wua Lai Road. Travel Gay lists it as open daily 1pm to midnight, with a jacuzzi, steam room and small dry sauna. The local guide does not mention it, so check its Facebook page first.
Massage: Classic House on Tha Phae Road Soi 4 is, by gay-in-chiangmai.com's account, Chiang Mai's longest-running gay massage shop. Common Massage & Spa at 27/4 Hussadhisawee Road in Chang Phueak is recommended by the same guide: around 900 baht an hour plus a tip of 500 to 1,500 baht. Agree on the service and the tip before you start. Many shops on older lists have closed, so go by recent reviews.
- House of Male, the sauna with a pool on Soi Sai Nam Phueng: listed as closed by gay-in-chiangmai.com (January 2026) and as temporarily closed by Travel Gay.
- Secrets Bar on Charoen Prathet Road: listed as closed by Nomadic Boys (June 2026), and its website no longer works. Pandee, Jacky, Route 181 and New My Way appear on the same closed list.
- Soho Bar on Huay Kaew Soi 3: closed in 2016, although old guides still list it.
- Lotus Hotel on Viangbua Road: the local guide lists the hotel as closed. Adam's Apple Club in the same complex is open.
- His Club massage and a long list of older massage shops: listed as closed by gay-in-chiangmai.com.
Pride and events
Chiang Mai Pride's history matters to locals. The first parade, on 21 February 2009, was blocked by a hostile crowd and called off. It returned in 2019 with more than 1,000 marchers. Pride has since moved to May. In 2026 the parade ran on Sunday 24 May, from the Chiang Mai Buddhist Centre through the Night Bazaar and along Loi Kroh Road to Tha Pae Gate, at the end of a week that included a run, workshops, an "Inclusive City" agreement signed at Tha Pae Gate with the governor, and a blessing for same-sex couples (Chiang Mai CityLife). The 2025 parade was on 25 May. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing; late May is the pattern.
Big non-gay festivals worth planning around: Yi Peng and Loy Krathong, with the full moon on 24 November 2026 (check the municipality's schedule for lantern events), and the Flower Festival, usually the first weekend of February (5 to 7 February 2027 is expected). Halloween is a big night at Ram Bar and Adam's Apple Club.
Community and health
MPLUS Foundation, 142 Moo 1, Chom Chan Alley, Chiang Mai-Hot Road, offers HIV and STI testing, PrEP and PEP, and counselling for gay men and trans people (053 283 108). Caremat's Buddy Station clinic runs free, confidential HIV and syphilis tests. The Chiang Mai Gay Men's Group meets on Saturday mornings for brunch in the basement food court at Kad Suan Kaew mall, according to gay-in-chiangmai.com.
Practical tips
- Getting in: Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is about 4 km from the old city, 10 to 20 minutes by Grab (roughly 80 to 180 baht). Flights from Bangkok take just over an hour; the overnight train from Krung Thep Aphiwat takes 10 to 15 hours.
- Getting around: Grab works well. Red songthaew trucks cost about 30 baht on shared routes; agree the price first if you charter one.
- When to go: November to February is cool and dry. Avoid the smoky season from February to April: on 1 April 2026 the air quality index hit 235, the worst of any major city that day.
- Host and go-go bars: ask about drink prices and off fees before you sit down. The drinking age is 20; bring a copy of your passport.
- Public affection between men draws little reaction in the old city and Nimman. Rural areas are more conservative.
A few words of Thai
Hello: sawasdee krap (men) or sawasdee ka (women). Thank you: khop khun krap or ka. No problem: mai pen rai. Where is the gay bar?: bar gay yoo tee nai? Kathoey is the everyday word for trans women but can be sensitive; sao praphet song is more polite. Tom and dee are the words for masculine and feminine lesbians.

Бари розташовані у трьох кластерах: Charoen Prathet Soi 6 за Night Bazaar (Ram Bar, Connections, Orion, поруч — шоу 6ixcret), Chang Phueak і Santitham на північ від старого міста (Adam's Apple Club, New Circle Club) та Nimman (BLOW CNX).
