The honest summary: Cork has one dedicated LGBTQ+ club, one adult cruise club, two strong community organisations and more queer history per head than almost anywhere in Ireland. It does not have a gay village, a gay sauna or a string of gay bars. Come for a weekend at Wilde, a drag brunch, the new LGBT history exhibition at Cork Public Museum, and Pride on the August bank holiday, and you'll get a real picture of queer Cork.

Legal in one line

Same-sex sex has been legal in Ireland since 1993, marriage since the 2015 referendum (62.07% yes, the first country to do it by popular vote), legal gender recognition by self-declaration since 2015, and sexual orientation and gender are protected under the hate offences law in force since 31 December 2024.

The scene today

Wilde, at 64 Oliver Plunkett Street, is the city's only dedicated LGBTQ+ nightclub and the one place you can count on for a queer night out. The building was Conway's Yard, then Vibe from February 2024; the Clancy's group relaunched it as Wilde in November 2024, and it calls itself Cork's only late-night LGBTQ+ inclusive club. Expect drag, live singers, karaoke, quizzes and DJs on weekend nights, closing around 2:30am. Nights move around, so check wildecork.com before you go. It is also the only bar on Gay Project's Gay Card list.

Nudes Craft & Cocktail on Lavitt's Quay is a mainstream cocktail and craft-beer bar, not a gay bar, but it's friendly ground: Gay Project holds its LGBTQI+ parents' meetings there. Good for a quieter drink before Wilde.

Most of the rest of queer nightlife is promoter-run, at venues that are otherwise mainstream. Mockie Ah!, the drag collective founded in 2017 by Candy Warhol, is the busiest: drag brunches at Clancy's on Princes Street and Sky Bar on Marlboro Street, a residency at The Everyman theatre, and an annual Pride party at The Pav on Carey's Lane. Milk runs queer club nights at Dali, also on Carey's Lane, and SAINTS put on a drag party at Kino on Washington Street for Pride 2026. Taboo's Pride party at Cyprus Avenue is a summer fixture. None of these is weekly, so check Instagram or our events page.

Brief Encounters, at 3 Connell Street near Parnell Place bus station, is Cork's adult cruise club: about 4,000 sq ft with two cinemas, booths, a sling room, dark areas and a shop. It's a dry club with no sauna, open from noon daily. A late-2025 listing said only the shop was open during renovation, so check brief-encounters.com/cork first. There is no gay sauna in Cork; the nearest is the Boilerhouse in Dublin.

Where things are

There's no gay district. Everything is on or near the city-centre island between the two channels of the Lee. Oliver Plunkett Street holds Wilde; Carey's Lane, a minute away, has The Pav and Dali; Lavitt's Quay is on the north channel. Across the river, MacCurtain Street and the Victorian Quarter have most of the mid-range hotels and are close to Kent Station. Cork's first gay centre opened at 4 MacCurtain Street in 1976. Douglas Street, south of the centre, is where Loafers stood.

History you can actually visit

Cork punches far above its size here. The city held a Gay Pride Week in 1981, twelve years before decriminalisation, and hosted Ireland's first National Gay Conference on 15-17 May that year. The Quay Co-op opened on Sullivan's Quay in 1982, The Other Place community centre in 1991, and Cork sent the first Irish LGBT float to a St Patrick's Day parade in 1992. Two Progress Pride crossings were painted on Patrick Street in June 2022.

On 19 August 2026 Cork Public Museum in Fitzgerald's Park opened "We Were Always Here – Cork LGBT History", the first permanent LGBTQ exhibition in any Irish museum, built with the Cork LGBT Archive founded by Orla Egan. It's free, open Tuesday to Saturday, and a 20-minute walk west along the Mardyke. If you do one queer thing in Cork by daylight, make it this.

Pride and events

Cork Pride changed hands. The company that ran it, Cork LGBT+ Pride CLG, went into liquidation in November 2025 after High Court costs from a dispute with a former employee. A volunteer group, Cork Community Pride, formed in February 2026 and ran that summer's Pride over the August bank holiday weekend: a family picnic in Fitzgerald's Park on Saturday 1 August and the parade on Sunday 2 August, gathering from 1pm and starting and finishing on Grand Parade. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced at the time of writing; the bank holiday weekend is the usual slot.

PRIOSMA, Cork's queer film festival run by Out of Frame Cork, held its third edition on 10-13 September 2026 at the Arc Cinema, Triskel and The Everyman. Year-round, the community calendar is busier than the nightlife: LGBTQ+ football (Cork Rebels FC), rugby (Cork Hellhounds), inclusive GAA (Na Laochra Aeracha), badminton (Cork Racketeers), Frontrunners, the LGBT choir Choral Con Fusion, and Gay Project's cafés and groups. Community and support

Gay Project, at 10/10A High Street, is the organisation for gay, bi, trans and queer men: social cafés, Rainbow Yogis, a book club, support services and monthly rapid HIV testing. LINQ Ireland, at 11A White Street, has worked with lesbian, bisexual and queer women since 1999 (it was LINC until 2025) and is trans and non-binary inclusive. The Sexual Health Centre at 16 Peter's Street does rapid HIV testing, STI screening and LGBTI counselling. UP Cork runs an LGBTI+ youth group for 15-23-year-olds.

Closed or changed

Gone but still Googled: Loafers on Douglas Street, Ireland's oldest gay bar when it closed in May 2015. Chambers on Washington Street stopped being a gay bar in September 2023 when it became Sinners. Atlas on Marlboro Street was a drag-run queer bar from 2022; we found nothing on it after 2022, and the building now trades as Sky Bar. Vibe and Conway's Yard are earlier names of Wilde. The Loft closed in 2022. Directory listings for a "Cork Sauna" and a "Cork LGBT Centre" at Dillons Cross have no evidence behind them.

Practical tips

Cork Airport (ORK) is about 8 km south; Bus Éireann 226 runs to Parnell Place and Kent Station in roughly 25-40 minutes. Trains from Dublin Heuston take about 2.5 hours. The centre is small enough to walk everywhere. Cork is generally relaxed about same-sex couples, but late weekend streets can get rowdy, as in any Irish city. In October 2025 two drag performers were kicked while filming on Oliver Plunkett Street (the attacker got eight months in jail), so use the usual night-out sense. Pubs close earlier than clubs; Wilde is where the night ends.

Sláinte – cheers. Go raibh maith agat – thank you. Aerach – gay (as in Na Laochra Aeracha, "the gay heroes", the LGBTQ+ GAA club). "Langer" is Cork slang for an idiot, usually affectionate.
