Porto is a granite city, and for much of the year a wet one: rain blows in off the Atlantic, the cobbles shine on the steep lanes above the Douro, and a hot steam room feels like a reward. Afterwards, the local cure for the cold is a francesinha and a fino, Porto's word for a small draught beer. The gay sauna scene is small and easy to read: two men-only saunas, both on the slope just north of the Bolhão market and Trindade, about five minutes' walk apart. One is the afternoon option, the other keeps going into the night, and neither is fancy.
Legal in one line: Portugal decriminalised sex between men in 1982, added sexual orientation to the constitution's anti-discrimination clause in 2004, opened civil marriage to same-sex couples in 2010 and adoption in 2016. Gay saunas are legal private venues for adults.
Sauna Thermas 205: the late one
Sauna Thermas 205 is at Rua Guedes de Azevedo 203 (the door is number 205), a short walk from Trindade and Bolhão metro stations. It's a long-running venue: Time Out described it in 2017 as open since 1991. Men only.
- Facilities: a dry sauna and a steam room, many private cabins, a darkroom, a video room and a lounge with a TV, plus a smoking area.
- Why go: it's central, roomy and open late, and listings describe it as recently renovated. misterb&b calls it reliably busy, with a friendly, mixed-age crowd and staff known for showing newcomers around. Don't expect a pool, jacuzzi or bar: drinks come from a coffee and snack machine.
- Hours: Travel Gay and other listings give daily, 14:00 to 02:00. We couldn't confirm this with the venue, which points people to its Facebook page (thermas205), so check there before a late visit or on a holiday.
- Price: visitors in March and June 2026 reported paying €12. Towels and flip-flops are reported to be included.
- Facilities: a Finnish (dry) sauna, a Turkish steam bath, showers and lockers downstairs, and a TV lounge and cabins upstairs, plus a small bar and a video room.
- Hours: listed as 14:00 to 20:00 from Sunday to Friday and 13:00 to 20:00 on Saturdays. It is not a late-night venue: by 20:00 it's closed.
- Price: €8.50, as listed by Travel Gay in May 2025. Check the venue's website or phone +351 222 087 425 for current prices.
- Getting there: both saunas are a short walk from Trindade, the main interchange of the metro network, and close to Bolhão station. The metro runs roughly from 06:00 to 01:00, so after a late night at Thermas you'll need Uber, Bolt or a taxi.
- Andante card: Porto's public transport uses the blue Andante card, which costs €0.60 and is then topped up with trips; a single Z2 trip (enough for the city centre) costs about €1.40 as of 2026. Tap the card on the yellow validator before every journey, including when you change lines. There are no ticket barriers, but inspectors do check, and you can be fined.
- Cash: Thermas is listed as cash only; bring euros in small notes for both venues.
- Hills and steps: Porto is steep, with cobbles and long flights of steps between the river and the centre. The walk from Ribeira up to the saunas is a real climb, so take the metro to Trindade or a taxi if you've been on the port. With limited mobility, plan for it: Thermas has stairs and no adapted toilets, and Camões is spread over two floors, so call ahead.
- Apps: Grindr is widely used in Porto, and a quick look around the centre will show you who's nearby.
- Health: if you need PEP after a risk, go to the emergency department (urgência) of a public hospital as soon as possible, within 72 hours.
- Olá – hi. Obrigado – thank you (said by a man).
- Saúde! – cheers!
- Toalha – towel. Chinelos – flip-flops. Cacifo – locker.
- Banho turco – steam room. Sauna seca – dry sauna.
- Quanto custa? – how much is it?
- Não, obrigado – no, thanks.
- Fino – a small draught beer (Porto word). Cimbalino – espresso (Porto word).
- Tripeiro – a Porto local, the city's nickname for itself.
The crowd: 2026 reviewers describe friendly reception staff and a wide age range, one mentioning men from their twenties to their eighties. Weekends look busiest: one Sunday visitor in 2026 counted 30 to 40 men. Other 2026 visitors found it quiet, and an older review suggested late afternoon to early evening as a good window.
Know before you go: a May 2026 reviewer found the steam room not very hot, and another complained about phone use and drugs inside. A trans visitor described the venue as safe and clean overall, but said some men ignored a "no". You can always say no, walk away or leave, and the front desk is there if someone won't take the hint. There are stairs to the lower floor and no adapted toilets, so it isn't wheelchair-accessible.
Sauna Camões: the afternoon one
Sauna Camões is at Rua do Bonjardim 689, a few minutes' walk from Trindade station. Time Out called it the direct heir of the old Tipo Sauna in 2017. It's small and old-fashioned, about 240 m² over two floors according to that review.
The crowd: mostly mature men, according to recent visitors, who describe it as cosy and discreet.
Know before you go: reviews from 2025 and 2026 are mixed. The dry sauna is very small; several visitors reported a steam room that wasn't working, cold showers or a dry sauna switched off before closing; others said it was clean and warm, with helpful staff. One visitor noticed smoke and incense indoors, and in winter it can feel cold. Ask at the desk whether everything is running before you pay.
Closed or changed: the old Spartakus sauna and Bar Spartakus have closed. Sauna Camões, the successor to Tipo Sauna, may still appear at Rua de Camões 389 in older listings; current listings use Rua do Bonjardim 689.
Not a gay sauna: Mistik
You may see Mistik Sauna Club (Rua Câmara Pestana 445, in the east of the city) in searches. Porto's tourist board lists it as a mixed, naturist and swingers' sauna for couples and singles, with a couples-only area. It isn't a gay venue, so choose it only if that's what you want.
Beyond the saunas
If you'd rather a cruise bar, The Hole is Porto's men-only cruising bar, listed at Rua da Alegria 1018, with darkrooms, cabins and glory holes. Details are in our Porto cruising guide. For a drink before or after, Bar of Soap is about 100 metres from Thermas. A short walk downhill, the bar streets around the Galerias de Paris and Rua Cândido dos Reis are mostly mixed, but Travel Gay's current listings include Fabrik Bar (Rua da Galeria de Paris 109), a cocktail bar that turns into a DJ party at night; Invictus Café Bar (Rua da Conceição 80), known for its drag shows; and Café Lusitano (Rua de José Falcão 137), which gets going after midnight. Check their social pages for this week's nights; the rest of the city's bars are on our Porto bars page.
A Porto afternoon
Camões's hours suit a classic Porto day. Walk the riverside at Ribeira in the morning, climb back up through the tiled churches to the Bolhão market, then spend the afternoon in the steam. Afterwards, do what the city does on a cold evening: order a francesinha, Porto's famous sandwich of steak and cured meats under melted cheese, drowned in a hot beer-and-tomato sauce and usually served with chips. It's heavy and it's worth it. Finish with a glass of tawny port, or a fino, and then head to Thermas if the night is still young.
Practical tips
Porto Pride and events
The 21st Porto LGBTI+ Pride March (Marcha do Orgulho LGBTI+ do Porto) took place on Saturday 27 June 2026. It left from Praça da República in the afternoon and ended at Largo Amor de Perdição, where speeches and entertainment followed from 18:00. RTP counted more than 300 marchers at the start, and speakers warned of rights going backwards. Porto Pride is a grassroots march rather than a big commercial festival, and the date moves between late June and July (the 2024 march was on 29 June, the 2023 edition in early July). The 2027 date had not been announced as of October 2026; check our Porto Pride page.
In autumn, Queer Porto, the city's international queer film festival, returns; its 12th edition is listed for early November 2026. Check the festival's own programme for dates and venues.
