Bottom line: Blackpool retains the North’s largest gay scene outside Manchester, concentrated in a few streets behind the North Shore seafront. Its specialty is cabaret: drag, singalongs, bingo, and karaoke in old seaside pubs, often with a guesthouse upstairs. It is not stylish and does not try to be. It is cheap, loud, and friendly, peaking during summer weekends, Pride in June, and the Illuminations.
Legal status: Same-sex sexual activity is legal across the UK. Same-sex marriage has been legal in England since 2014. The Equality Act 2010 prohibits discrimination by bars, hotels, and shops based on sexual orientation or gender reassignment.
Where the scene is
The gay village occupies the North Shore, specifically the grid of terraced streets between the Promenade and Blackpool North station: Dickson Road, Queen Street, Lord Street, Talbot Road, Cocker Street, and connecting segments of Springfield Road and Banks Street. Blackpool Council brands the area under its "Be Who You Want To Be" campaign, with Lord Street—the site of the Pride street party—designated the Rainbow Quarter. Everything listed here, except the Whitegate clinic and the Starr Gate dunes, is within a ten-minute walk of the station.
Older guides incorrectly place the scene in the town centre or on the South Shore. The town centre around Church Street and the Winter Gardens is mainstream nightlife. The South Shore is where Pleasure Beach is located.
Bars and cabaret
Funny Girls is the most recognizable name. It opened in 1994 and has occupied the former Odeon at 5 Dickson Road since 2002. The building is a Grade II-listed 1939 Art Deco cinema. It hosts seated drag cabaret most nights. The audience skews toward hen parties and coach trips; treat it as a gay-run show rather than a gay bar. Oscars Lounge is the smaller bar inside the same building. Founder Basil Newby sold the venue in 2026 upon retirement. Shows are scheduled through 2027. Book weekend tables via the venue's website.
The Flying Handbag on Queen Street has operated since the mid-1990s. It delivers the standard Blackpool formula: afternoon singers, karaoke, quizzes, and large themed drag shows at weekends. A few doors down, Kaos closed for refit in April 2026 and reopened under new ownership on 11 July 2026, as reported by Attitude. Visit Blackpool lists entry as free; expect DJs and party nights.
Garlands on Talbot Road is the other long-standing gay bar. Its website lists drag cabaret daily: Sunday comedy drag, singalong nights, and midweek guest cabaret. Peek A Booze on Dickson Road is a gay bar with hotel rooms upstairs. Its weekly calendar includes bingo, karaoke, Blankety Blank nights, and live singers, with drag shows on Sundays. Mardi Gras Public Bar & Hotel on Lord Street is a gay-run hotel featuring a public bar, pool table, and karaoke. It hosted a free community day during Pride 2024.
For a quieter pint, Churchills on Topping Street is not a gay bar, but Travel Gay lists it as gay-friendly with an older gay clientele. It opens at 10:00 daily.

Saunas and cruising
Blackpool has two gay men's saunas, both operating during the day and early evening rather than overnight. W3 at 1-3 Charles Street includes a dry sauna, steam room, hot tub, cabins, and a sun deck. Travel Gay lists entry at approximately £10. Hours are 11:00–20:00 Tuesday to Friday, until 22:00 on Saturday, and until 19:00 on Sunday. An NHS sexual health clinic operates there on the last Thursday of each month. Acqua Sauna at 25-27 Springfield Road offers a jacuzzi, steam, sauna, and cabins, with towels and lockers included. It closes at 18:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, so go in the afternoon.
Growlr Club @ Man Bar at 25 Dickson Road is a men-only cruise bar, open Friday and Saturday from 21:00 to 02:00. It hosts the Growlr Club bear night. It is the legal indoor option for cruising.
The Starr Gate / St Annes Sand Dunes dunes, where the promenade ends at Starr Gate, appear in older cruising guides. We could not confirm current listings. Lancashire Police conducted both uniformed and plain-clothes patrols there in April 2025 following indecent exposure reports. Sexual activity visible to others can lead to arrest in England. This is a public beach used by families; the saunas and Man Bar are the safer choices.
Where to stay
This is what makes Blackpool unusual in Britain: a full street grid of gay and gay-run guesthouses, most within a two-minute walk of the bars. They are small terraced houses with residents' bars and breakfast, not boutique hotels. They fill up during Pride and Illuminations weekends.
- Men-only: Trades Hotel on Lord Street (approx. 60 rooms, membership required on booking, residents' bar open very late) and The Prince Albert Hotel on Yates Street (discreet men-only hotel for gay and bi men, stairs only).
- Gay hotels and guesthouses: Chaps Hotel and Phoenix Guest House on Cocker Street, The Molly House on Dickson Road (gay-owned, formerly Windsor House), Pride Lodge on High Street (adults only), Lawrence House Hotel on General Street, Welhorny's on Banks Street, and DeLovely Hotel on Lord Street.
- Gay-run or gay-friendly: Q Accommodation (formerly Seacroft, 27 Lord Street, adults only), The Dragonfly on Lord Street, and Lee & Chris’s Belvedere, Blackpool on Dickson Road. The latter went up for sale in June 2026; its owners told the Blackpool Gazette it would become weekends-only if it did not sell. Check dates before booking.
- Flamingo: Basil Newby opened the original on Talbot Road in 1979 as Blackpool's first gay nightclub. That building was demolished in 2007. The later Flamingo on Queen Street is no longer a gay venue.
- Sapphires (114 Talbot Road): closed. Its licence was surrendered in April 2023.
- Sherlock's Bar (23 Queen Street): Google lists it as permanently closed. We found no activity in 2026.
- Northern Star Hotel (Lord Street): closed. Its licence was surrendered in February 2024.
- The Seacroft (27 Lord Street): now Q Accommodation. Same address.
- Oscars Lounge: not a separate bar. It is the lounge inside Funny Girls.
- Lu-Lu's Cabaret Lounge (Dickson Road): we found no current evidence it operates as a gay venue. It is off our list.
- Liquid Sauna: closed years ago. The two active saunas are W3 and Acqua.
- Getting there: Blackpool Airport has no scheduled passenger flights in 2026. Fly to Manchester. Direct trains run from Manchester Airport to Blackpool North (1 hour 30 to 1 hour 40) and from Manchester Piccadilly (as fast as 1 hour 10). Preston is about 22 minutes away by train.
- Getting around: the village is walkable from Blackpool North. Seafront trams run south past the Tower to Pleasure Beach and Starr Gate.
- When to go: summer weekends, Pride weekend in June, and Illuminations weekends are the busiest. Midweek in winter is very quiet, and some bars cut nights. Check before you travel.
- Money: drinks are cheap by UK standards. Most guesthouses impose minimum stays on summer and Illuminations weekends.
- Late at night: the town centre around Talbot Square and Church Street gets rowdy with stag and hen crowds after midnight. Walk back with friends and use licensed taxis.
Peek A Booze and Mardi Gras also rent rooms above their bars. Expect noise on big weekends wherever you stay in the village.

Pride and events
Pride Blackpool is run by the Blackpool Pride Festival committee, a registered charity (blackpoolpride.org). It launched in 2006. The 20th-anniversary festival ran 5–7 June 2026 at the Tower Festival Headland under the theme "One Love, One Pride": a parade along the Promenade on Saturday morning, a street party on Lord Street, and headliners Heather Small, 911, and the Cheeky Girls. The 2024 and 2025 editions were branded "Blackpool, Wyre & Fylde Pride". Organisers do not publish attendance figures; local press describes it as "thousands". Pride 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing, though one Lord Street organiser posted a save-the-date for a street party on 4 June 2027.
The other busy period is the Illuminations, running 4 September to 3 January 2027. Bars add extra shows and guesthouses fill up, particularly on weekends. Our Blackpool events page aggregates weekly listings from the Flying Handbag, Garlands, Peek A Booze, and Pride Lodge.
Community and health
URPotential runs LGBTQ+ youth groups (ages 10–13, 13–18, and a trans group for 13–18) plus family support. Lancashire LGBT, based in Preston, hosts a monthly LGBTQ+ swim and a gender outreach drop-in in Blackpool. For testing and PrEP, the NHS Sexual Health Services Blackpool (Whitegate Health Centre) is located at Whitegate Health Centre, 150 Whitegate Drive. It has late opening on Mondays and Thursdays and a Saturday morning session.

Practical tips

A few words
You will hear English with a Lancashire accent. Two bits of local vocabulary help. A sandgrown'un is someone born and raised in Blackpool. Polari is the old British gay slang that drag acts still drop into their patter: bona (good), vada (look), omi-palone (gay man), naff (rubbish).

FAQ
Is Blackpool gay-friendly?
Yes. It has one of the most established gay scenes in Britain outside the big cities. The law protects LGBTQ+ people fully, and the village is open and visible. The usual seaside-resort caution applies late at night in the town centre.

Where is the gay village in Blackpool?
On the North Shore, between the Promenade and Blackpool North station: Dickson Road, Queen Street, Lord Street, Talbot Road, and Cocker Street. It is not in South Shore.
How many gay saunas does Blackpool have?
Two: W3 on Charles Street and Acqua on Springfield Road. Both close in the evening rather than running overnight.

When is Blackpool Pride 2027?
Not announced at the time of writing. Pride Blackpool is usually held over a weekend in early June. In 2026, it ran on 5–7 June at the Tower Festival Headland.
Is Funny Girls still open?
Yes. It changed owners in 2026 when Basil Newby retired. Shows are listed into 2027. Book weekend tables ahead.
Are there men-only hotels in Blackpool?
Yes: the Trades Hotel on Lord Street and the Prince Albert Hotel on Yates Street. Most other gay guesthouses welcome everyone, and several are adults only.
