Gay Saunas in Rio de Janeiro: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

In Rio, the day belongs to the beach. At the gay stretch of Ipanema, in front of Rua Farme de Amoedo near Posto 9, the afternoon slides by in sungas, caipirinhas and volleyball. Then comes the ritual every visitor remembers: the sun sinks behind the Dois Irmãos, and the crowd on the Arpoador rock breaks into applause. The sea breeze picks up, people shake the sand off, and many of the men walk barefoot, still in their swimwear, a few blocks up Rua Teixeira de Melo into the cool showers and hot steam of the sauna. Rio has one of the biggest sauna scenes in Latin America, and its saunas are wildly different: a polished, tourist-friendly spa a block from Ipanema beach, old mansions in Flamengo and Glória full of garotos, a party sauna in bohemian Lapa that runs until 5 a.m., and a brand-new 24-hour cruise club downtown. Here's how to choose, and what each one is really like.

Legal in one line: Brazil has had marriage equality since 2013 and has treated homophobia as a crime akin to racism since 2019. Rio is one of the most gay-friendly cities in South America, but its streets still call for big-city caution at night.

Before you go: take Uber or 99 door to door at night, especially to Centro, Lapa and Glória. Leave your passport and spare cards in the hotel. Check your bar bill before paying; several 2026 reviews report wrong or inflated charges. And never accept a drink from someone you've just met: the "Boa noite, Cinderela" scam, where a drink is spiked and the victim robbed, has long targeted gay men in Rio, often after meeting on an app.

Which sauna for which crowd

Rio's saunas sort themselves by neighbourhood, and knowing the map saves you a wasted evening:

    • Ipanema (Rio G Spa): international tourists and fit, younger locals straight from the beach, with a polished, resort-like feel. Peak time in summer is 17:30–19:00, right after sunset.
    • Copacabana and Flamengo (Point 202, Sauna Copacabana, Ariô): more local and more mature, men in their 40s, 50s and beyond, coroas (silver foxes) and bears.
    • Botafogo and Glória (SB, Club 117): mixed local crowds, theme nights and, at Club 117, plenty of garotos.
    • Lapa and Centro (Chupps, Dédalos Rio): younger, queerer and more alternative, a night-owl crowd for late parties and 24-hour cruising.

    Zona Sul: Ipanema and Copacabana

Rio G Spa · R. Teixeira de Melo 16, Ipanema

The tourist favourite, one block from the beach and a short walk from the gay stretch at Farme de Amoedo. It's open daily, roughly 15:00–22:00, with dry sauna and steam room, cabins, a darkroom, a maze, a small gym, a video room, a bar and massage. The crowd is international and mixed in age, and it's packed at weekends, especially after beach hours on Friday to Sunday; weekdays are quieter. The house enforces a no-drugs, no-rent-boys policy, which is a big part of its appeal. It's more expensive than the others, and prices rise in high season. Some reviewers mention steep stairs and worn towels; bring your own condoms. Website: riogspa.com.br.

    Point 202 · R. Siqueira Campos 202, Copacabana

A small, busy Copacabana sauna near the Siqueira Campos metro stop, with dry and steam saunas, cabins, a gym, a bar, a smoking area and occasional drag shows; a new suite was added in 2025. It's busiest in the late afternoon and early evening. Entry was about R$80 in 2026, with caipirinhas at around R$45, and several visitors report billing mistakes, so check your tab. Garotos work here.

    83 Men's Club (ex-Sauna Copacabana) · R. Dias da Rocha 83, Copacabana

A traditional men-only sauna with a pool, steam room, sauna, solarium, cabins, a darkroom and massage, open roughly 14:00–21:00. It's popular with older men and their admirers and, according to its listing, doesn't allow escorts. It isn't yet on GayOut; call ahead to confirm hours.

    Flamengo, Botafogo and Glória

SPA Ariô · R. Corrêa Dutra 34, Flamengo

One of the best-rated saunas in Rio on Google, near the Catete and Largo do Machado metro stations: dry sauna, steam room, a swimming pool, a maze, cabins, a bar, a TV room and massage. Entry was R$70–80 in 2026. Staff are praised as friendly and the place as clean and organised. The crowd is mature, mostly men over 50, so it's better for a relaxed afternoon than for meeting twenty-somethings. Hours on Instagram, @spaario3.

Sauna SB (Sauna Botafogo) · R. Dezenove de Fevereiro 162, Botafogo

A big sauna near Botafogo metro, known to regulars simply as "SB", spread over several floors with dry and steam saunas, cabins, a darkroom, a cinema room, a smoking area and a dance floor, and theme nights for bears, twinks and more. It's open daily from early afternoon, until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Entry was around R$50 in late 2025. Weekdays are quiet; weekends are packed and hot. Recent renovations get praise, but the jacuzzi has been reported out of order.

    Club 117 · R. Cândido Mendes 117, Glória

An old house turned sauna and bar, with dry and steam saunas, a jacuzzi, a darkroom, cabins, a terrace and suites to rent, open roughly 15:00–01:00 (closed Mondays). It's best known for its garotos, and it's the place to know what you're walking into: entry was about R$100 in 2026, a suite about R$77, and some visitors found the escorts persistent. Others love the party atmosphere. Agree any price clearly in advance.

    Centro and Lapa

Downtown has the cheapest and most local saunas, and the newest cruise club. The streets are lively by day and in Lapa's party hours, but rough at night; go by Uber, door to door.

Chupps Club · R. do Rezende 28, Lapa

The party sauna: dry and steam saunas, a small jacuzzi, a darkroom, cabins, a video room, karaoke at the bar and a dance floor. It's open late, typically from 16:00 to about 23:00 on weekdays and until 05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, with big themed parties (one in January 2026 cost R$90 with an open bar from 23:00). The crowd is younger and more alternative than elsewhere. A recent renovation won praise; showers and the occasional smell less so. Events on chuppsclub.com.br.

Dédalos Rio · Av. Calógeras 6, Centro

The Rio branch of São Paulo's famous cruise club, opened in 2026: a 24-hour cruise bar with dark rooms and themed nights, and free drinks on Wednesdays. It's not a sauna, but it's become the city's main late-night cruising venue.

    Also downtown

    • New Meio Mundo, R. Primeiro de Março 115, near Uruguaiana metro: a lively old-school sauna with drag and go-go shows, but recent visitors found it shut at posted times. Check Instagram (@newmeiomundo) before going.
    • Kabalk, R. Santa Luíza 459 in Maracanã: small and basic, listed as open roughly 14:00 to 21:00 (to 22:00 at weekends).
    • Sauna Carioca, R. Barão de Guaratiba 20, between Glória and Catete: a small men-only sauna with a local crowd, open daily 15:00 to 22:00 by its listings. Not to be confused with SPA Ariô around the corner.
    • Sauna Bonsucesso, R. Bonsucesso 252-A, Zona Norte: open daily, local crowd, far from the Zona Sul hotels.
    • For cruising rather than steam, Taurus on Rua da Lapa and Seven on Praça da República have darkrooms and cabins.

    Practical tips

    • Getting around: the metro is safe and handy by day (Siqueira Campos, General Osório, Botafogo, Catete, Uruguaiana). At night, use Uber or 99.
    • Paying: most saunas take cards. Pix, Brazil's instant payment, needs a Brazilian bank account and CPF number, so carry a card and some cash.
    • Garotos: in Brazil, garotos de programa (male escorts) in some saunas are an open, accepted part of the scene, not something hidden or shameful. Respect goes both ways: if you're not interested, a smile and a polite "não, obrigado" settles any approach straight away; if you are, agree the price and what's included before going to a room.
    • Bar tabs: many saunas give you a comanda (a tab card or wristband) and you pay everything at the exit. To avoid surprises, pay for each drink as you go where possible, or check the comanda after every order and keep your receipts.
    • Apps: Hornet is hugely popular with Brazilians, often more than Grindr, so install both. Meet in a busy public place first.
    • Before and after: sundowners on the beach at Posto 9, then drinks on Rua Farme de Amoedo in Ipanema. After a late sauna, a bowl of açaí or a cold chopp at a corner bar is the carioca way to end the night.

Pride and health

Rio Pride: the 31st Parada do Orgulho LGBTI+ is set for Sunday 22 November 2026 on Avenida Atlântica along Copacabana Beach, under the theme "Reconhecemos justa toda forma de amor e de existência". It's the biggest weekend of the year for the saunas. Carnival (February/March) is the other.

Health: Brazil's public health system, the SUS, offers free HIV testing, PrEP and PEP. If a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: go to a public UPA emergency unit or a hospital emergency room and ask for PEP.

Carioca words worth knowing: a carioca is someone from Rio; a sunga is the classic Brazilian swim brief (half the sauna arrives in one); Farme or Posto 9 is shorthand for the gay beach in Ipanema; gostoso or bofe means a hot guy; maneiro is cool, valeu! is thanks, partiu? means "shall we go?", and mermão is bro. And after the sauna, the perfect end to the night is a chopp gelado, an ice-cold draught beer, at a corner boteco.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gay sauna in Rio de Janeiro for tourists?

Rio G Spa at Rua Teixeira de Melo 16 in Ipanema is the easiest choice for visitors: a block from the beach, open daily from about 15:00 to 22:00, with dry and steam saunas, cabins, a darkroom, a gym and a bar, an international crowd, and a policy of no drugs and no rent boys. It's pricier than the others and packed at weekends.

How much does a gay sauna cost in Rio?

Roughly R$50 to R$100 in 2026. Visitors report about R$50 at SB in Botafogo, R$70 to R$80 at Ariô in Flamengo, R$80 at Point 202 in Copacabana and about R$100 at Club 117 in Glória, with Rio G Spa at the top end. Drinks, rooms and massages are extra, and prices rise in high season and at Carnival.

Are there garotos de programa in Rio's saunas?

In several, yes. Club 117 and Point 202 are known for male escorts (garotos de programa), and at Club 117 some visitors find them persistent. Rio G Spa and Sauna Copacabana say they don't allow escorts. If you're not interested, a firm, friendly 'não, obrigado' is enough, and always agree any price before going to a room.

Is it safe to go to gay saunas in Rio?

The saunas themselves are generally safe, but Rio's streets need care at night, especially in Centro and Lapa. Take Uber or 99 door to door, carry only what you need, check your bar bill before you pay, and never accept a drink from someone you've just met: the 'Boa noite, Cinderela' drugging-and-robbery scam targets gay men in Rio.

When is Rio Pride 2026?

The 31st Parada do Orgulho LGBTI+ do Rio de Janeiro is set for Sunday 22 November 2026 on Avenida Atlântica along Copacabana Beach, with trios elétricos, DJs and drag. The saunas and bars are at their busiest that weekend, so book accommodation early.
