The honest summary

Boise has one gay bar. The Balcony Club on 8th Street is it, and local outlets such as City Cast Boise say the same. Everything else in queer Boise happens at The Community Center's events, at Pride in September, or at mainstream bars that host the odd queer night. That makes for a small, friendly scene rather than a night of bar-hopping.

The Balcony Club

The Balcony Club is upstairs in the Capitol Terrace building at 150 N 8th Street, Suite 226, and calls itself Boise's only queer nightclub. It opens at 4pm and runs until 2am. Thursday to Sunday is certain, but listings disagree about Monday and Wednesday, so check its Instagram before an early-week visit. The programme is built on drag: king and queen shows, a Second Sunday drag brunch and contests such as Boise's Next Drag Superstar. Queer karaoke runs on Thursdays and Sundays, and DJs take over at weekends. The balcony over 8th Street is the place to be on a warm evening. It is 21+, so bring photo ID.

Queer nights at mainstream venues

In 2025 Downtown Boise listed a weekly LGBTQ karaoke night, "Loudly and Proudly", on Sundays at Mad Swede Downtown Brew Hall (816 W Bannock Street), co-run with the Boise Trans Collective. Drag-king brunches have also appeared at Hap Hap Lounge on Broad Street. These are mainstream venues hosting queer events, not gay bars, and the nights come and go, so confirm before you head out.

Not gay bars, whatever old lists say

Overland Bar on West Overland Road is a 1950s karaoke dive with no LGBTQ+ identity. Neurolux is an indie music venue. In Garden City, Somewhere (Boise's queer community bar from 2021) closed on 2 November 2024, and The Ranch Club that reopened on the site in 2025 is a general nightclub. The Lucky Dog Tavern on Fairview Avenue closed in 2019 and is now a police station.

Where queer Boise meets instead

The Community Center (TCC) at 1088 N Orchard Street has been southwest Idaho's LGBTQ+ center since 1983. Its calendar runs most nights: game nights, karaoke, book clubs, support groups and youth programmes. Flying M Coffee House at 5th and Idaho is a mainstream café that City Cast Boise calls the city's "unofficial queer town hall", open until 10pm most nights.

Practical tips

Downtown is compact, and The Balcony Club is a short walk from the downtown hotels. Rideshare is the easy way home; ValleyRide buses thin out in the evening. Idaho's 2026 bathroom law (HB 752) applies to private businesses, which matters for trans visitors planning a night out. For Pride in September, see the Boise Pride Festival page.
