Boise has one gay bar, one LGBTQ+ community center and one big Pride weekend, and that is roughly the shape of queer life in Idaho's capital. The Balcony Club on 8th Street carries the nightlife, The Community Center (TCC) on Orchard Street carries almost everything else, and Boise Pride fills Ann Morrison Park every September. Around that core sits a progressive, walkable downtown in a state whose legislature has spent the last few years passing some of the toughest anti-trans laws in the country. Come for the river, the foothills and a friendly small scene; don't come expecting a gay district.
Legal in One Line
Same-sex marriage is legal (federal law since 2015, Idaho since October 2014), Boise has had a city non-discrimination ordinance since 2012, and Ada County added its own in 2020, but Idaho's state human rights law has no sexual orientation or gender identity protection, and a 2026 law (HB 752) makes it a crime for trans people to use bathrooms matching their gender in most public places, including private businesses.
A Little History
Boise's queer history has a dark opening chapter. In the "Boys of Boise" scandal of 1955 to 1957, police and prosecutors questioned around 1,500 people and 16 men were charged, mostly for consensual sex between adults. Idaho's first gay bar, Shuckey's, opened in Boise in 1976 and lasted until its building burned in 1989. Boise Pride began in 1989 and reached its 37th edition in 2026. Nicole (now Cole) LeFavour became Idaho's first openly gay legislator in 2004 and later founded the Add the Words campaign, which has spent more than a decade asking the state to add sexual orientation and gender identity to its human rights act.
Neighborhoods
Downtown is where everything a visitor needs sits: The Balcony Club on 8th Street, Flying M Coffee House at 5th and Idaho, the Grove Plaza, the Basque Block on Grove Street between Capitol and 6th, and BoDo to the south. It is compact and easy on foot.
The North End and Hyde Park (the shops and cafés on 13th Street) are the leafy, walkable residential districts just north of downtown where a lot of queer locals live. There are no gay venues there, but it is the nicest part of town for a long walk and a coffee.
Garden City, the small separate city wedged into Boise's west side along Chinden Boulevard, used to have the queer bar Somewhere. It closed in November 2024, and The Ranch Club that reopened on the same site in 2025 is a general nightclub, not a gay bar.
The Community Center sits west of downtown at 1088 N Orchard Street, a short drive or bus ride away.
Bars and Nightlife
The Balcony Club (150 N 8th Street, Suite 226, upstairs in the Capitol Terrace building) calls itself Boise's only queer nightclub, and local outlets such as City Cast Boise agree it is the city's only gay bar. It opens at 4pm and runs until 2am. Thursday to Sunday is certain; listings disagree about Monday and Wednesday, so check its Instagram first. The programme is built on drag: king and queen shows, a Second Sunday drag brunch, contests such as Boise's Next Drag Superstar, plus queer karaoke on Thursdays and Sundays and DJ nights at weekends. The balcony over 8th Street is the best seat in the house on a warm night.
Beyond the Balcony, queer nightlife in Boise means events rather than venues. Downtown Boise listed a weekly LGBTQ karaoke night ("Loudly and Proudly", co-run with the Boise Trans Collective) on Sundays at Mad Swede Downtown Brew Hall in 2025, and drag-king brunches have popped up at Hap Hap Lounge. Both are mainstream venues hosting queer nights, so check that the night is still running before you go.
Boise has no gay sauna or bathhouse. The "sauna" results you'll find on maps are Nordic-style wellness spas and cold-plunge studios, which are not gay venues. We don't list any cruising areas for Boise, and with Idaho's current legal climate, apps are the safer way to meet people.
Community and Organizations
The Community Center (TCC), 1088 N Orchard Street, has been the LGBTQ+ center for southwest Idaho since 1983. It is volunteer-run with no fixed drop-in hours, but its weekly calendar is the most reliable picture of queer Boise: youth groups (Clutch, YAD, QSA), Tri-States Transgender Support Group, PFLAG, LGBTQ AA, book clubs, game nights, the Imperial Sovereign Gem Court's meetings and the Liberating Spirit MCC service. Call +1 208-336-3870 or check tccidaho.org.
Other active groups include the Boise Gay Men's Chorus (a December holiday concert and June Pride concerts, often with the Boise Women's Chorus), PFLAG Boise/Treasure Valley, the Boise Trans Collective and Add the Words.
Shops and Cafés
Wear Haus (1726 W Main Street) is a queer- and trans-owned upcycled clothing and screen-printing shop on the western edge of downtown, open Wednesday to Sunday. Flying M Coffee House (500 W Idaho Street) is not a queer business, but City Cast Boise calls it the city's "unofficial queer town hall", and it stays open until 10pm most nights.
Boise Pride is in September, not June. The 2026 festival, the 37th, ran 18 to 20 September at Ann Morrison Park by the Boise River, with free park entry, a ticketed Pride Friday headlined by Trixie Mattel and a Sunday parade along River Street ending at the park. The festival moved to Ann Morrison Park in 2025 after years at Cecil D. Andrus Park by the Capitol. Organisers haven't published an attendance figure, and the 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing; watch boisepridefest.org.
Canyon County Pride in Nampa (Lakeview Park, June) started in 2024 and drew more than 4,000 people in 2025. Trans Day of Visibility (31 March) brings a rally to the Idaho Capitol; in 2026 the city formally recognised the day and lit City Hall in trans-flag colours.
Where to Stay
Downtown is the easiest base, because you can walk to The Balcony Club and back. Hotel Renegade and the Modern Hotel are on West Grove Street at the western end of downtown, The Grove Hotel is on the Grove Plaza next to the arena, and Boise Heritage House is a small lodging on West Idaho Street. The Riverside Hotel in Garden City sits on the Greenbelt river path. Book early for Boise State home football weekends and Pride weekend.
Boise Airport (BOI) is about 5 km south of downtown, roughly 10 minutes by car. ValleyRide buses, run by Valley Regional Transit, connect the airport and downtown, but service is thin in the evenings and at weekends, so most visitors use rideshare or a rental car. Downtown, the North End and the Boise River Greenbelt are easy on foot or by bike. Boise is on Mountain Time.
Safety and Practical Tips
Boise itself is a comfortable city for LGBTQ+ visitors, and downtown is relaxed about same-sex couples. The state is a different story. In 2026 Idaho passed HB 752, a criminal bathroom law that covers private businesses as well as government buildings, with a misdemeanour for a first offence and a felony for a second within five years. Gender-affirming care for minors has been banned since 2023. A separate 2026 law (HB 561) forced Boise to take down the Pride flag it had adopted as an official city flag in 2025, and the city answered by wrapping its flagpoles in Progress Pride colours. Trans travellers in particular should read up before the trip. Outside the Treasure Valley, rural Idaho is more conservative, so keep the usual awareness on road trips.
Closed or Changed: Gone but Still Googled
Somewhere (Garden City) closed on 2 November 2024; the site is now The Ranch Club, which is not a gay bar. The Lucky Dog Tavern on Fairview Avenue closed in 2019 and the building became a police station. Shuckey's closed after a fire in 1989. Overland Bar and Neurolux show up on some gay lists, but neither is an LGBTQ+ venue. Boise State's Gender Equity Center closed in November 2024 under Idaho's DEI rules.
A Few Words
There's no local language to learn, but two local terms help: the "Treasure Valley" is the Boise–Meridian–Nampa metro, and the "Greenbelt" is the 40 km riverside path that runs through it.

One.
Canyon County Pride у Нампі проходить у червні, Trans Day of Visibility (31 березня) привносить мітинг до Idaho Capitol, а Boise Gay Men's Chorus дає святковий концерт у грудні.
