Shilo Inn Salem

I was disappointed with the condition of my room at Shilo Inn. The pull-out couch was in particularly poor shape. The pleather upholstery is disintegrating, and the couch cover that appears to be holding it together had visible stains on it. Throughout the room there were signs of significant wear and damage, including stained and torn curtains, damaged tables and countertops, a worn bathtub, damaged light switches, and stains and holes in the walls. One of my biggest concerns was the room door. It requires being pulled shut very hard to latch properly, and even then it did not feel particularly secure. This is something that should be addressed for guest safety and peace of mind. The room was also lacking basic amenities. There were no extra blankets or pillows available, and despite continental breakfast still being advertised, none was offered during my stay. Instead, there was a bowl of inexpensive chocolates available in the lobby. To be fair, the hotel is currently renovating the 4th floor, which may explain some of the wear and tear and why the elevator was unusually slow. I appreciate that improvements are underway, but many of the issues I experienced affected comfort, cleanliness, and overall value. I hope the renovations extend to addressing these concerns because the property has potential, but in its current condition I would have difficulty recommending it.

This is a hotel I would avoid if possible. There was construction on the 4th floor which was frequently blamed for service issues even though the issues should not have been impacted by this. Specifically: dark, uninviting lobby; dark, musty, dirty hallways; no breakfast; lukewarm coffee in dark corner of lobby; dirty, unkept outside parking lot and grounds; evening front desk clerk was friendly, others not so much. Overall feel was that no effort was being made to make customers feel welcome. On the positive side, the room we had was decent. One just needs to ignore everything else and get inside the room.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was beyond disappointing. I booked this hotel through Expedia for my husband while he was traveling to Salem during WOU graduation weekend. The reservation was confirmed, and we received multiple confirmation notices leading up to his stay. When my husband arrived to check in, he was informed that the reservation had been canceled. The explanation given was that the hotel had sent a message through the Expedia app two days earlier requesting a callback. However, the message did not indicate that the matter was urgent, that it was related to the reservation, or that there was a system issue that could result in the booking being canceled. There was also no follow-up communication through another channel or even a second message emphasizing the importance of a response. We were told there was a "glitch" in the system and that the hotel could not provide additional details through the Expedia message system. Regardless of the cause, canceling a confirmed reservation without clearly communicating the risk to the guest is unacceptable. Because this occurred during WOU graduation weekend, alternative accommodations were either unavailable or significantly more expensive. The lack of communication and the handling of the situation created a great deal of unnecessary stress and inconvenience. This experience reflects a serious breakdown in customer service and reservation management. I hope management reviews these procedures to ensure future guests do not encounter the same situation.

I needed a place to stay while i was in Salem for a couple of weeks and stumbled upon the Shilo Hotel, and I am more than grateful i did. They are currently under renovations so there was no breakfast at the time but with the money j saved i went right next door to the Sassy Onion and had a great breakfast. The staff is wonderful and went above and beyond consistently. I never had a single interaction that I didn't walk away from happy and knowing they were truly trying to make my stay as pleasant as possible. I was set to check out on a Saturday and things fell apart and i needed to stay a couple extra days they gave us a discounted rate even though it was memorial day weekend when everyone else's prices were all hacked up. They could have charged me more and should have it's a money maker for them but great customer service won out. When do you get this kind of service anywhere anymore? I can't think of a single instance in the last 5 yrs that was better or even equal customer service. This place is top notch. The king rooms are huge compared to anything else I've seen here or in Portland. The dividing wall between the bed and living area make it feel like a 1 bedroom apartment. Not to mention you are literally seconds from I-5. So if you are heading north or south you aren't going to spend time fighting city traffic to get to the interstate and get on your way. I wish I could give more than 5 stars, especially for the service. There is no place I'll stay when I come to Salem. I know there are fancier hotels but for the money I'll take the Shilo Inn every day. Thanks for making my stay a wonderful experience. Shawn

Good place to lay your head. But not much more than that. They're remodeling the 4th floor. So, NO breakfast bar for you, as the soup Nazi would say. It's not conveniently located. You'll have to go elsewhere to get services. I had a junior suite, that was nice 🙂. Very quiet 🙂 Good price point for the room. WiFi was poor. Seems like it dates back some 15 years or so. Needs more speed. Might I add that at the moment of liftoff of SpaceX Falcon heavy their Internet went offline. That really sucks. Fix it please. Maybe some day they'll get it done.

Worst place to stay. Creepy alleys, saw a pegion in elevator. Would give zero if i can

The room was very old and not clean. Beds were dusty, bedsheets had stains, and both me and my friend had bad itching all over our body after staying here. Definitely needs better cleanliness and maintenance.

Was 'ok'

Made a 2 night reservation. Upon arrival after a 3 hour drive we were informed that the manager cancelled our reservation for non payment before we even arrived. When we asked why the room was attempted to be charged before we even arrived, we were told it is policy to charge earlier in the day before guests check in. Our account has over $1500 in that account, so how they could not charge it is indeed my question. Furthermore, if you are having an issue with processing payment, why were neither myselfnor my husband contacted by either of our phone numbers or even by email. We had no notification of an issue with payment or notified our reservation was being cancelled. Horrible customer service and clearly didn't care they left us without a room at 10pm at night and left to scramble to try to find other accommodations after a very long travel day. Will never book with any Shilo Inn again.
