Prague does not have a strong tradition of specifically gay retail in the way that some larger cities do. There is no equivalent of the Old Compton Street shops in London or the dense LGBT retail scene in Amsterdam. What exists is smaller and more scattered. That said, Vinohrady and the surrounding area have some options worth knowing about, and the general shopping in Prague is good value.

What is available

A small number of adult shops and pride merchandise stores operate in Prague, mostly in the Vinohrady area or in the city centre. These cater to the local gay community and to tourists. They are not extensive in terms of selection, but they cover the basics. Some bars and venues in Vinohrady also sell merchandise.

For books, Czech LGBTQ+ literature is obviously limited in terms of what is available in English. General bookshops in Prague carry some English-language titles and the overall English-language book selection in the city is better than you might expect. Specialist gay literature is harder to find in physical form.

General shopping

Prague's Old Town has a wide range of shops, markets, and boutiques, though much of it is oriented toward tourist merchandise. Vinohrady has more everyday retail: pharmacies, supermarkets, independent cafes, and some fashion and lifestyle shops that serve the local residential population. The Palladium shopping centre near Namesti Republiky has mainstream retail if you need it.

The covered markets in the city, particularly Naplavka by the river on weekends, have food, crafts, and vintage goods. They are worth visiting regardless of what you are specifically looking for.

The shops

    • CITY FOX — Only Gay erotica shop in Prague Gay video, dvd and dvd rental shop on the same street as Pinocchio. They have a wide range of films including a large selection from their own film company City Fox featuring Czech actors. It also sells a few sex toys, magazines, lubricants and the odd novelty.

Practical notes

Czech koruna is the currency; most shops accept cards but it is worth having cash for markets and smaller independent businesses. VAT refunds are available for purchases over a certain threshold for non-EU visitors. For the broader Prague picture, see the Gay Prague Guide.
