Manila has a lively and visible gay scene — concentrated in the Malate district and parts of Quezon City, with a range of venues from karaoke bars to proper dance clubs. The Philippines has a longstanding culture of LGBTQ+ visibility, particularly around drag and performance.
Malate — The Main Gay District
Malate, particularly around Ma. Orosa Street and Leon Guinto Street in Manila proper, is the historic gay area. Several venues operate here:
- O-Bar (Ma. Orosa Street, Malate) — a drag institution; performers here are among the best in Southeast Asia. Shows run late and the crowd is enthusiastic. This is the venue for drag in Manila.
- FAB Bar & Restaurant (1739 Ma. Orosa Street, Malate) — gay-friendly bar and restaurant; good for dinner before the clubs, relaxed atmosphere.
- Jefz Cafe (1811 Leon Guinto Street) — gay karaoke and sing-along bar with live music and shows inside the New Solanie Manila hotel. Regular drink promotions. Filipinos take karaoke seriously — this is genuinely good fun.
- KING MACHETTE KTV Entertainment Bar (Remedios Street) — KTV bar with macho go-go dancers, karaoke, and comedy shows. One of the more flamboyant options.
- Club Mankind (44 Sct. Ybardolaza, Quezon City, near Timog Ave) — live shows, drag queens, male models, and dancers. Opposite the Red Planet hotel. More club-oriented than the Malate venues.
- Boyzone Bar (774 Aurora Blvd) — known for its dancers and friendly staff; more straightforward bar environment.
- Getting around: Grab (the regional Uber equivalent) is essential — traffic is severe and taxis can be unreliable. The venues are spread across different areas of Metro Manila.
- Hours: Philippine nightlife runs late — most venues don't peak until midnight or 1am. Closing times vary but many run until 3–4am on weekends.
- Prices: Very affordable — drinks are cheap, cover charges are minimal or free.
Quezon City
The larger metropolitan area beyond Manila proper has its own gay venues, particularly around Timog Avenue:
Bed
On Rizal Avenue — well-regarded for music and lighting. One of the recommended dance venues in the city; inexpensive entry and drinks by Manila standards.
