Queer Bar opened on Capitol Hill in 2018 and almost immediately established itself as the neighbourhood's most culturally vital LGBTQ+ venue. The bar's founding philosophy — explicitly queer rather than gay-male-with-others-welcome, with a commitment to showcasing local drag, trans, non-binary, and BIPOC queer performers — captured a moment in Seattle's LGBTQ+ culture and built a loyal, demographically diverse audience that older Capitol Hill venues had not managed to cultivate. The interior is deliberately stylish: rotating art installations from local queer artists, good cocktails (better than the average bar menu), and a sound system that serves the performances without overwhelming the space. The drag programming is exceptional — Seattle has a deep pool of drag talent, and Queer Bar books the best of it consistently.
