Frequently asked questions about LGBTQ+ travel in Albanien

Same-sex relations are legal in Albanien, but social attitudes vary and public displays of affection can attract negative attention. Major cities and international tourist areas are usually more welcoming than smaller towns and rural areas.

No — same-sex marriage is not currently recognised in Albanien. Albania decriminalised consensual same-sex relations in 1995 and set an equal age of consent in 2001. That is where the progress on relationships stopped: the constitution limits marriage to a man and a woman, there are no civil unions, and same-sex couples cannot adopt jointly or as step-parents. Where Albania does better than most of the Western Balkans is anti-discrimination law. A 2010 act covers sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, services and housing, hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation were added to the criminal code in 2013, and conversion therapy on minors has been banned since 2020. Legal gender change is still not possible. Tirana Pride has marched every year since 2012, usually with a police cordon and little trouble. Outside the capital, attitudes are conservative and most LGBTQ Albanians stay discreet with family and employers. For visitors, Tirana is relaxed and has a small but real scene; elsewhere, treat public affection as something to keep low-key rather than something that will get you arrested.

The cities listed on this page have the most active LGBTQ+ scenes in Albanien — typically the capital and the largest tourist cities. Each city page lists verified LGBTQ+ venues.

Many hotels in tourist areas of Albanien welcome LGBTQ+ guests without explicit marketing. International chains in central districts are the safest choice; smaller boutique hotels vary. See each city page for verified LGBTQ+-friendly options.
