Plaza San Martin is the square in which Peru declared its independence. It is a place of demonstrations by the people of the country. When my wife and I visited the Plaza there were a large contingent of police dressed in riot gear with shields. Although things remained quiet while we were there.

Nice large public square about 10 walk from Plaza Mayor. Massive statue with San Martin on a horse anchoring square that’s very omposing. Plaza celebrates Peru independence and is very well maintained.

The square is of great historical importance in the life of the city, where Peru declared independence. The square was opened on 27 July 1921 to mark the 100th anniversary of independence. They named the square after the national hero and liberator of Peru, José de San Martín. Central to the square is his bronze equestrian statue set on a tall granite pedestal. The height of the monument is about 16 meters. The design of this monument won a competition won by Spanish sculptor Mariano Benliure. One misunderstanding occurred during the construction of the monument due to a mistake by a sculptor who confused the Spanish words "flame" (llama) and "llama". As a result, the Motherland figure mounted on the pedestal end has a tiny llama crowning its head instead of flame tongues. This monument is also distinguished from others by the presence of spikes on top of the bronze statue. On such horse riders love to rest pigeons, of which very much lives in the square, it is from them that a kind of protection was established. In addition to its unique monument, the square is famous for the magnificent buildings surrounding it, built in the early 20th century, among them the Grand Hotel Bolívar and the Colón Theatre. In 1988, the square was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Located in the historic centre of Lima, Plaza San Martín is one of Peru’s most iconic squares, opened in 1921 to celebrate the centenary of independence. Known for its white neocolonial buildings, it houses the monument to José de San Martín and is close to the famous Plaza de Armas. Location of meetings and demonstrations of the Peruvian people. She is well taken care of and goes into retirement (when I was).

The Plaza de Armas is more lively as a square, but the buildings surrounding the square are European streets and worth a look on their own.

One of the main squares of the Peruvian capital, with the monument honoring the general of the same name in its center. It is a point frequently used as a starting point to explore the historic center of the city.

We passed in front of it by bus, I was not particularly impressed, except for the statue of the General, from which it takes its name, which dominates the square.

The building architecture is worth seeing, but I think Plaza Mayor de Lima is prettier. There are several restaurants around this plaza though if you're interested.

The historic city of Lima became a United Nations World Heritage Site in 1988 Visitors can also visit Plaza Mayor, Plaza de Armas, and Plaza San Martin. Weapons Square and St. Martin's Square are a few blocks away, all a 13-minute walk away, and you can take a day to see the historic city.
