The entrance to the school of music is simple, as is the room itself, but the coffee is truly excellent. It's especially worth a visit if you like smoothies. The fruit smoothies are freshly made and are fantastic.

I had an extremely rude encounter with an employee at CafeTica. I was performing a concert at Pyatt Hall inside the VSO School of Music on a Sunday afternoon, and during my break between soundcheck and the concert, I stopped by the cafe for lunch. When I was paying, the tip screen appeared on the card reader, and the employee said to me, “you can afford to tip.” Confused, I replied, “excuse me?” He then pointed at my arm and said, “You can afford to tip because you have tattoos.” This comment was incredibly rude, inappropriate, and presumptuous. A customer’s appearance should never be used to make assumptions about their finances or pressure them into tipping. I was a student at the VSO School of Music years ago and am now a professional violinist working in the city. Unfortunately, this interaction left such a poor impression that I will not be returning, and I’ve shared this experience with colleagues as well.
