I was excited to visit since I hear about it often, but it felt overhyped. The venue is small and cramped, even on a Wednesday night. The bar has a solid selection of mid-range to high-end liquor. We ordered a variety of family-style dishes for our group of five; they were good but not extraordinary. The fairy lights were nice, but I’m not eager to return.

We had a fantastic evening at Work & Class in Denver. From the food and atmosphere to the service, this is the type of restaurant that manages to feel casual and fun while still delivering a seriously impressive dining experience. Johnny was our server, and after talking with him for a few minutes, we handed him our menus and told him to make all the decisions for us. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of the evening. Johnny clearly knew the menu inside and out and put together an outstanding meal from beginning to end. We started with the salad, chickpea croquettes and empanadas. Each brought something completely different to the table and was a great introduction to the style of food at Work & Class. The chickpea bites were particularly memorable, with a beautifully crisp exterior and a flavorful interior, while the empanadas were equally enjoyable. For our entrées, Johnny selected the lamb, roasted chicken and carne asada. This was an excellent combination because it allowed us to experience several different preparations and flavors. The chicken arrived beautifully roasted with an incredibly flavorful, well-seasoned exterior while remaining juicy inside. The lamb was rich and tender, and the carne asada was cooked perfectly, with a great sear and plenty of flavor. There really wasn’t a weak dish among them. Johnny also chose the plantains and macaroni and cheese for our sides. The macaroni and cheese was rich, creamy and indulgent—the kind of side dish that you continue eating long after you have told yourself you are full. The plantains provided a great contrast and helped round out an already excellent meal. One of the things we enjoyed most about Work & Class is the restaurant’s format. The menu encourages you to order several items, share everything and experience a wide range of flavors. It makes dinner feel more social and interactive, particularly when you have a knowledgeable server helping guide you through the menu. The atmosphere is equally enjoyable. It is lively, energetic and unpretentious, with an open-kitchen feel that allows you to watch the team preparing food just a few feet away. There is a lot happening around you, but rather than feeling chaotic, it adds to the personality and energy of the restaurant. Finally, the service deserves special recognition. Johnny didn’t simply take our order—he genuinely enhanced our entire experience. His selections were thoughtful, his timing was excellent, and by the end of the meal we were very happy that we had trusted him with every decision.

The picanha WAS our favorite item on the menu, but it was taken off and replaced by the most chewy carne asada of my life :/ The lamb is excellent though. As are the plantains.
