Khartoum SDG 03:13 GMT+02:00 Alto riesgo para LGBTQ+
✗ Matrimonio igualitario ⚖️ Sudan criminalises sodomy under Article 148 of the Criminal Act for same-sex and opposite-sex couples alike. The 2020 reforms under the transitional government abolished the death penalty and flogging for it, but the current penalties are up to five years for a first offence, seven for a second and life for a third. There is no recognition of same-sex couples, no anti-discrimination protection and no legal gender change. The civil war that began in April 2023 between the army and the RSF has collapsed the legal system in much of the country; what matters now is not the statute but the armed group controlling a given area, and both sides have been accused of sexual violence. Even before the war, documented enforcement was rare and the real threat came from family, vigilantes and public denunciation; a 2019 survey found 17 percent of Sudanese calling homosexuality acceptable. The small activist groups that existed, Freedom Sudan, Rainbow Sudan and Bedayaa, mostly operate from abroad. Sudan is a war zone and most governments advise against all travel; LGBTQ visitors have no safe margin there.
