Haka House Christchurch

Very neat hostel of almost hotel-like quality. It is very clean, the beds are comfortable, and it feels spacious. If you are really looking for a social hostel, this is not the right place. If you are looking for a clean place close to the city center, bus stops, and the stadium, then this is one of the ideal locations. A minor downside is that the bathrooms are a bit of a walk away.

Dorms in Haka house are really nice. Shower needs a bit more care but in general everything is good.

Superb location. Really near airport bus stop. Fab guy on reception who was kind and informative. Shared individual bathrooms which we didn’t realise when we booked but wasn’t an issue. Good sheets. Clean rooms. Fridge and kettle in room. Lovely communal area with bookshelf to leave or choose a book. Wonderful!

The room and the shared areas were very clean, and I had a quiet and comfortable stay for two days. There are plenty of bathrooms, so there was always one available and I never had any trouble using them. All the staff were very kind, and Diego in particular was amazing. He kindly gave me a locker key and a hairdryer for free when I didn’t have them. It’s located right in the city centre, so it’s very convenient and you can easily walk to the bus station. Highly recommended!

We stayed here one night in March 2026 and really liked it. We requested that our group of 3 would be in the same room and that worked out well. 2 well equipped kitchens, 2 huge common areas with a billard table, laundry with really good dryers and we really loved that you can pay over a QR code and not need to use coins. The rooms were very clean, windows did open, ensuit bathrooms were clean with good showers. The beds all had light and spaces to put things and all had curtians, towels are for hiring if you need. Location is very good 3 min walk to town center, 2 min walk to the bus stop that comes and goes to the airport. Wifi was stable, its not a super social hostel and not a party hostel, staff was friendly. One thing that needs improvement is that the luggage stroage is to small, several times we could not fit our bags in and had to leave them in one of the common areas. Otherwise we really liked it and would come back!

We booked a double room with an en-suite bathroom for four nights through booking.com and paid in advance (approx. €300). We arrived at Hakahouse in the evening and were only offered a double room without a bathroom, as they supposedly didn't have any rooms with en-suite bathrooms. The room also had an incredible number of small animals, and the grounds and veranda were filthy. We were told to contact Booking.com, as they claimed they were unable to cancel the booking and refund our money. I find it unacceptable that we were led to this place with false information, incurred additional costs for last-minute hotel bookings, taxis, etc., and then Hakahouse simply said, "We can't do anything, you have to sort it out with Booking.com." Sorry, but if false information is given and things are offered that don't exist, in my opinion, that's a criminal act. Furthermore, things were mixed up in the subsequent communication, and promises weren't kept. After so many positive experiences and good people in New Zealand, this was by far the biggest disappointment, and we're still waiting for our money.

We were a bit disappointed with this hotel. We had booked a double room with a private bathroom, but we had to leave the room to use a bathroom across the hall. It wasn't private, as anyone could use it, and it was often occupied. So, we were clearly given the wrong room. In any case, we paid for a service we didn't receive. The beds were comfortable, but the window had been left open, and we had to hunt for insects. The late arrival procedure was very simple to follow, but since there was no one at reception, we couldn't do anything to change rooms. I think if we had received what we paid for, we would have given it 5 stars, but given these inconveniences, that's not possible.

Stayed in this hostel for one night and beds were comfy, rooms were nice and there were all individual bathrooms/ shower rooms. This was both good and bad- they were nice but it seemed there wasn’t enough for everyone staying. However, my main reason for only 3 stars was because they decided to close every single bathroom on my floor (1 of 2 floors so at least half of all- that I know of, closed) between 8am and 9am. This surely is peak time for people to get up and use the toilets, shower, brush their teeth. All of which I could not do until they were done. Seems like an odd time to do this? Otherwise, a nice place. Good WiFi

I had issues on both of my stays and reception was useless both times, I only chose this place as they had the cheapest price for those nights but I guess I should’ve learnt my lesson the first time. Asked to move to an upper bunk bed as I’m claustrophobic and the room was completely empty, the receptionist said he would change it - came back to the room to find another person on the bed that was supposed to be switched to me. I was only staying one night and was the first person to enter the room so that wouldn’t have been an issue, I guess the receptionist was too lazy to change the bed letters on the envelope. Also as someone who works in a hotel, I think that making guests pay to store bags in the luggage room is pretty weird. There are definitely better options in town.
