The Berlin CSD (Christopher Street Day) is Germany's second-largest pride event and one of the most culturally significant in Europe, held each July in the city that has been a global beacon of queer liberation since the 1920s. The parade route from Kurfürstendamm through Schöneberg — Berlin's original gay neighborhood — to Nollendorfplatz draws over 700,000 participants and spectators.
Berlin's pride is notable for its explicitly political character. The CSD organization chooses a political theme each year and actively campaigns on LGBTQ+ rights issues in Germany and internationally. The parade is preceded by a rally at the Brandenburg Gate and followed by open-air events on the Strasse des 17. Juni.
The week of events surrounding the CSD parade fills Berlin's world-famous nightlife infrastructure: Berghain, SchwuZ, KitKatClub and dozens of other venues run special programming. Berlin's position as the world's clubbing capital amplifies everything around pride week.
