⚖️ Guyana is the last country in South America that still criminalises sex between men, under colonial-era sections of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act that carry up to life imprisonment; the law is not enforced but has never been repealed. Sex between women is legal. The Caribbean Court of Justice struck down the cross-dressing law in 2018. There is no recognition of same-sex couples, no anti-discrimination protection (a sexual orientation amendment passed in 2000 but the president refused to sign it), and no legal gender change. The political mood shifted in 2025: five of the six major parties backed decriminalisation before the September election and President Irfaan Ali pledged to repeal the law in cooperation with the activist group SASOD, but as of late 2026 the repeal has not been enacted. Georgetown held its first Pride parade in 2018 and polling shows hostility falling, with 72 percent of Guyanese telling a 2022 survey they accept or tolerate LGBTQ people. Discrimination and violence remain common, especially against trans people, and the scene is small and private.
