Sobre este lugar James Baldwin Residence

From 1965 until his death in 1987, James Baldwin kept his American home in a modest rear ground-floor apartment at 137 West 71st Street. The building became a family compound of sorts: his mother lived in apartment 1B, his sister Gloria upstairs in 4A, and for a time Toni Morrison was a neighbor under the same roof. Baldwin had already changed American literature by the time he moved in. Giovanni's Room (1956) put same-sex love at the center of a serious American novel decades before that was safe to do, and Baldwin spoke publicly about sexuality at a time when almost no figure of his stature would. He marched on Washington in 1963 and from Selma to Montgomery in 1965; the apartment on 71st Street then became a gathering place where civil rights leaders and Black literary figures argued late into the night about race, gender and justice. The numbers alone tell you how productive these years were: fourteen of Baldwin's works were published while he lived here, and his 1976 children's book Little Man, Little Man is set in and around this very house, with his niece and nephew as its heroes. The city and the nation eventually caught up. The building was designated a New York City Individual Landmark in June 2019 and added to the National Register of Historic Places that September, one of a wave of LGBTQ-history designations around Stonewall 50. What you see today: an occupied private apartment building on a quiet residential block — an 1890 rowhouse converted to apartments in 1961. There is no museum and no confirmed plaque; view it respectfully from the sidewalk. It pairs naturally with a walk through the Upper West Side or a subway ride down to the Village sites of Baldwin's circle.
