📸 Suggérer des photosApocalypse Now has no right to still exist and yet here it is ? one of the most enduring nightlife venues in Southeast Asia, a club that has been packing its open-air courtyard and indoor dance floor with a riotously mixed crowd for more decades than most of its current clientele have been alive. The name is deliberately provocative, the history is genuinely interesting (it has been raided, reinvented, and resurrected multiple times), and the current operation is one of the most reliably entertaining nights available in Ho Chi Minh City. The venue works on the principle that everyone is welcome and the quality of the night depends on everyone present, regardless of origin, orientation, or sobriety level. The crowd on any given night includes: Vietnamese students and young professionals from across the city's social classes, expats from every country with a significant presence in HCMC, backpackers from the Pham Ngu Lao strip nearby, business travelers who escaped their hotel for the evening, and a consistent LGBTQ+ contingent for whom Apocalypse Now has been a reliable mixed venue for as long as anyone can remember. The music is commercial and crowd-pleasing ? chart house, pop remixes, the occasional Vitnamese pop anthem that brings the local contingent to the dance floor in force ? and the DJ reads the room with enough skill to keep the energy high from midnight to the close. The outdoor courtyard is one of the draws: the tropical air, the trees, the general sense of improbable outdoor clubbing in the middle of a dense Asian city. The inside dance floor handles the overflow and the heavier sound levels. For LGBTQ+ visitors, Apocalypse Now is not a gay club but it is a club where being LGBTQ+ is entirely unremarkable and where the mixed crowd creates a form of safety-in-diversity that is its own kind of welcome. It works best as a complement to a Lush visit rather than a replacement ? different energy, different crowd, different point in the evening ? and pairing the two across a night gives a full picture of what District 1's nightlife offers.
