  1. 1860The British colonial penal code's Section 377 criminalized same-sex relations with two years to life imprisonment, a provision Pakistan retained after independence in 1947. ↗
  2. 1979The Hudood Ordinances layered Islamic law punishments over the colonial ban, though they were not enforced against same-sex conduct after 1985. ↗
  3. 2009The Supreme Court recognized a third gender and ordered protections for khawaja sira and transgender citizens. ↗
  4. 2018The landmark Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act allowed gender self-identification and banned discrimination in employment, education and housing. ↗
  5. 2023The Federal Shariat Court partially invalidated the act's self-identification provisions as un-Islamic, a rollback contested on appeal. ↗
  6. TodaySection 377 still criminalized same-sex relations and the community lived largely in secrecy, though transgender protections survived in weakened form. ↗
