Ratna Park

Ratna Park is a large public park in the centre of Kathmandu, next to the old Ratna Park bus station and a short walk from Thamel. For years it has been quietly known within the local community as the city's main outdoor gay cruising and meeting ground, especially in the daytime and early evening around the quieter edges and paths. Nepal decriminalised same-sex relations in 2007 and is one of South Asia's more legally progressive countries, so there is no legal threat simply to being here. However, Kathmandu remains socially conservative and this is a busy, very public space used by families and commuters, so any cruising is discreet and low-key rather than open. Police presence and general foot traffic mean caution and reading the situation matter. Travellers should treat this as a place to be aware of rather than a guaranteed scene: go in daylight for safety, keep valuables secure, avoid isolated corners after dark, and never assume interest. The organised community is far easier to meet at Pink Tiffany or through the Blue Diamond Society.
