Captain's Inn at Moss Landing

The ultimate soul drenching in quiet opulence! Surrounded by the intimate proximity to the monterey bay with its incredible birds sea life capped by playful Otters and silence. You may sit in the two person bath with a huge window looking out on the Elkhorn slough or enjoy the antique atmosphere of the main house dining area and recall a past from close to a 100 years ago. Truly a magnificent romantic getaway and easy 20 minute drive to Carmel! A must to stay.

Very bare bones but I think if your staying here that’s what your looking for. The views are great we saw a ton of birds and some otters. My wife and I were on our honeymoon and driving down the coast so it was well worth the stop. & in the event of having a feminine emergency there is a walmart maybe 12 mins away. The only issue I had was the lack of ice , they use a smaller ice machine and it takes a while to produce ice which is such a minor complaint I’m not taking any stars off for that. Stay here, you’ll enjoy it.

Charming small property, with lovely views of estuary areas filled with birds. My first floor River View room had a fine view. I expect the floor above had an even better one. The room was clean, with a very comfortable bed, including the pillows. Check in was online with code access, which went perfectly. It’s a perfect place to gaze out at many species wading and swimming within 150 feet.

Clean and quaint rooms with authentic features. Walkable to dining. Helpful management. Water estuary views were nice. Good value.

We had a really easy, comfortable overnight at the Captain's end. It was very nice. I would absolutely go back.

Clean, quiet and peaceful

Great location delicious food

My husband and I travel ALOT and this was one of the most disappointing stays we have ever had. 1. There is no heating or cooling and this is not disclosed at booking. There is a fireplace in the bedroom but you cannot sleep with that on. The windows can be opened to cool the room, but the curtains will blow and bang around all night, plus the window in the bathroom opens to the hallway and we had a passer buyer look in. 2. There is no elevator to the second floor. 3. We paid extra for the sail away room and the windows were so dirty we could not take photos clearly out the window or see with the binoculars. 4. The rooms are dated and not well kept. 5. The bed is extremely high off the floor and uncomfortable. The sheets felt dirty and ratty. 6. You can see into your neighbors room and they can see into yours. 7. Parking was inconvenient and confusing. 8. We did call about some concerns and whomever we spoke to did not care. We do not recommend and will not be back.

We stayed in the Boat House, the Sail Away room. The place was gorgeous, the room had a bed that was propped up (safely and securely) on an old boat, and from the bed you have a great view of the Salinas River. We saw about a dozen otters float by over the weekend, a ton of birds, and even a couple harbor seals. The room itself was cozy and warm, the gas fireplace really heats up the place. They even had a deck of cards and Yahtzee in the room, so we had something to do after sundown. We will definitely be staying here again next year.

I stayed at the Captain’s Inn three nights (November 22-25). If you have a chance to book a river front room-do it! The price is reasonable and view of sea otters and migratory birds are priceless. Everything worked in the room (huge bathtub, etc.). I will be back.

October 2025 Second time here. This time we stayed in Castaway. Another great room. We love how quiet it always is in the building on the back of the property. Waking up to mist on the slough is awesome. Often you can see otters floating past. October 2024 We stayed in the Sanctuary room, in the boat house. Loved it. Amazing 2-person shower with 2 full flow shower heads. Very unusual in drought conscious California. Absolutely quiet even with windows open. The only thing we could hear was the ocean waves. Bed was great, though the boat trailer lights did not work. We stayed 2 nights. Housekeeping came in and made up the bed and gave us some new towels. That service is very unusual post-covid. Due to Monterey County clamping down due to a covid surge breakfast was not served, so we cannot comment on it. It would have been nice. We hope to be able to enjoy it on our next stay. Also due to covid restrictions they had a contactless check-in that was flawless. Codes were texted to us. We received a phone call couple of day before letting us know about the text. We have 2 minor complaints. 1. We wish there was a mini fridge in the room as we travel with food and drinks in a cooler. 2. Off-street parking is limited due to the layout of the property. We very much look forward to another excuse to return and stay at The Captain's Inn again in the near future.
