Ferndale Pride is the smaller, more neighbourhood-oriented complement to the larger Motor City Pride downtown — held annually in June on Nine Mile Road in Ferndale, the suburb that has functioned as the Detroit metro's primary gay neighbourhood for decades. Where Motor City Pride is a large civic event at downtown's Hart Plaza, Ferndale Pride is a street festival on the block where the community actually lives and gathers: outside Affirmations, near Rosie O'Grady's, in the neighbourhood that has been home to the Detroit LGBTQ+ scene since the 1970s. The event draws approximately 15,000 people to Nine Mile Road for an afternoon and evening of live performances, community organisation stalls, food vendors, and the specific energy of a neighbourhood Pride — more intimate than the big downtown event, more rooted in the daily life of the community it celebrates. For visitors who want to experience Ferndale's character as a gay neighbourhood rather than just a bar destination, Ferndale Pride is the occasion that best reveals it.
